Hi Lisa, this is what I have:
Matthew Ridsdale of Spaldington = Ann Briggs of Bubwith, 18 Oct 1681
bap: Matthew 23 Sep 1682, son of Matthew of Bubwith
bap: William, 8 Feb 1685, son of Matthew of Bubwith
bap: Alice, 4 Sep 1687, dau of Matthew of Bubwith
bap: John, 28 May 1693, son of Matthew of Bubwith
bap: Ann, 5 Jan 1696, dau of Matthew of Bubwith
bap: Mary, 22 Jan 1698/99, dau of Matthew of Bubwith, received alms
There are no instances of Ridsdale in Bubwith prior to the marriage of Matthew Ridsdale.
No occupation is given for Matthew, which suggests he was of the labouring or ag.lab class, and the entry for the baptism of Mary strengthens this.
Similarly, in the neighbouring parishes of Aughton and Ellerton there are no Ridsdales earlier than Matthew. So I looked at Howden, the main ag.lab hiring fair town, and found a family of Ridsdales there.
An un-named son of William Ridsdale was baptised on the 11 Aug 1655 in Howden (making him 26 years old, if this was Matthew). It is interesting that Matthew named his first son after himself, and the second son William after....??
I would be inclined to focus on this family in Howden to see if you can eliminate them from your enquiries. This William in Howden was a tailor, however, living in Laxton.
As there were no Ridsdales in the Bubwith area prior to 1681 I am afraid my sites will not help you much if you are looking for the antecedents of Matthew. However, I can help with the development of the Ridsdales in Bubwith after Matthew.
