Shaken. She came to uninjured, merely shaken.

She should have been dead.

Was Coszcoatl alive? The question startled her.

The gasp caught in her throat.

As she lifted her rusty head from the dry ground, their attacker was fading into the trees’ early afternoon shadows. She watched anxiously, hardly daring to draw a shallow, uneven breath as Tobias stalked away. Even after he’d gone, her lavender eyes, darkened by unease, were hesitant to move away from the forest lest the monster spare a gander back. But she became more aware of her protector’s breathing as the moments passed. Because of his attention to her, she was alive. He needed her attention now.

He’d earned it.

As she worked on his wounds the confrontation played back in her head, powerfully reinforcing her gratitude. It hit her hard that she hadn’t fainted on the shore.

He had willingly leapt into the attack of a monster, and then further risked himself to make sure she didn’t drown. At first her eyes were wide, shocked: then she simply paused and smiled gently.

She cautiously pressed her nose to the side of his face.

Thank you. I’m Hush.
