Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob Bowlestowhee

new yard bird just showed up
was working at the computer and heard a sound other than the usual ones;
wondered if it was something from the new cardinal (yes, another cardinal has replaced the one that was taken by the hawk this winter)
didn't see a cardinal so i released some animosity towards the grackles, yelling at them to let the other birds have a chance, when a towhee hopped into view;
now that i've seen it, the sound makes sense - the call note as well as a partial drink your teeeee

the purple finches have been flashing their red velvet for about a week now but are looking very grumpy in this rain
had a brief visit by 2 fox sparrows yesterday
redpolls and juncos are still hanging out
woodpeckers are on nest - looking a little messy and ravenously eating the beef fat
a sapsucker was tapping its distinctive pattern this morning and flickers have been laughing and foraging in the neighbours lawn
there have been so many chipping sparrows that the ground seems to be alive with them
meadowlarks, white-throated sparrows and brown thrashers are singing
and two evening grosbeaks continue to squawk every morning
