At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

How lonely is the night without the howl of the wolf?

It was blatantly clear that Terrel knew exactly what was coming when the girl shifted her weight. His orbs held a dejected look and although he said nothing it was clear that the thought of a lecture was not one he favoured. None the less, the girl carried on with her speech determined that he would hear her words and their squabbles would be put to rest.

After her first lot of words had ceased the lad did nothing but mutter impatient sounds. His face held a look of despair as if he was the victim and the lovers had done wrong to him. In a way, the lass supposed, he was the victim. He was the one to have the rug pulled from under his feet, his whole world being shattered in the process. Channing could understand why he had acted the way he did, however you didn’t see her losing her temper when something didn’t go her way. No. She expressed her thoughts and feelings about things but in a much softer manner. She knew every wolf was different but didn’t the same manners apply? As she carried on with the next part of her speech, the lad seemed as though he did not want to and would not listen to the last of her lyrics- but by hook or by crook she would get through to him.

The lad’s next outburst came as a bit of a shock to the girl and for a moment she was taken aback. So the storm had arrived and what a storm it was. ’You don’t understand – I can take care of myself… I’m fully grown and I’m not the stupid pup you found bundled by the water! It’s you I’m worried about… What if he’s manipulative, or perhaps possessive or even if it’s none of those…? I know you’re bound to have a litter which is... Fine… But you have to birth them and not all births go smoothly… mother.’ Her auds flickered at every heartfelt word, taking them all in and processing them immediately. She wanted to be ready to answer anything and it looked like she had a bit of explaining to do here. ”I know you can take care of yourself, but I am your mother and it is my duty to care and worry about you. You need not be worried about me, I trust Henadin and so should you. He isn’t the wolf you think he is and if anything was to happen we would get through it.” The next words caused the girl to fall silent. Only hours ago, Channing and Henadin had been conversing about the future. They had decided that they would like to have pups and soon their own heirs would be brought into the world. She hadn’t thought any more about that plan as Terrel was her main priority but now it seemed her present and her future had come together all too quickly. ”I know they don’t. That thought passes through every females mind but it is a risk that we have to be prepared to take. Yes, one day myself and Henadin may have pups but that won’t be for a very long time.”

As the scene unfolded more, the timber ess began to feel worried about her son. His breathing became rapid and his eyes flashed upwards towards her. A concerned look appeared on the girls face as yet more lyrics flooded the air. ’My bearer was trapped exactly the same as you and she was pressured by family to give him up. She ignored him and you know what happened? Death, death happened. Pain and torture happened. If you refuse my warnings then there is nothing I can do, if it makes you happy I will sit back and watch you but just do not expect me to bond with him. Tolerating I can do…’ The words saddened her slightly as more hints of the boy’s past became apparent. So he saw her as being trapped like his birth mother. But she wasn’t trapped. She had chosen this path for herself and had not been pressured into anything. The last part brought more pain to the girl than anything. She had hoped that one day the two males would come to care for each other as much as she cared for the both of them. It appeared that Terrel had other ideas. ”I assure you Terrel, I am not trapped. I was not pressured and have chosen this path of my own accord. If I had felt pressured or unhappy then we would not be in this situation. It saddens me to know that you witnessed such terrible things at such a young age but nothing like that is happening here, I promise you. I would have hoped that in the future you would have come to care for Henadin, but if you can tolerate him without tearing chunks out of him every time you see him then so be it. I will be happy with that. Thank you.”

Channing’s eyes widened as her son slid to the ground, his eyes closing tight and his breath cutting short. He gasped like he was in terrible pain and just as he had done, a concerned whimper escaped her maw. He exclaimed that he hurt and the girl moved forward nuzzling her son terribly. ”It’s okay I am here. You don’t need to need to be scared or frightened anymore. Take deep breaths little man.” Resting close to the boy the girl kissed her son on the cheek, hoping to reassure him that everything was okay.

Come stop your crying, it will be all right. Just take my hand, hold it tight. I will protect you from all around you. I will be here, don't you cry. For one so small, you seem so strong. My arms will hold you keep you safe and warm. This bond between us can't be broken. I will be here don't you cry.
