At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Instead of pain, Terrel felt guilt – he had forced his mother to a pleading mess of apologies but try as he might Terrel could not settle his hazy mind. His ears flickered briefly listening to her splutters. He shook his head; desperately attempting to calm his breathing rate - in and out, in and out… “No,” he said, his voice stronger than it had been, “it’s not your fault…” Although stronger, it was also occupied with a coarse, scratchy tone. It was true; it was not her fault. The fault lay upon his parents (the real ones, that being.) who had fed his fear, fed his pain. They had reduced him to a shivering wreck of skin and bones; they had reduced him to a fearful young adult. Or perhaps more centre pointed, his father. The father who had beaten him, crushed his soul with a powerful domineer. He felt weak and he felt battered but he would not be dominated by haunting memories that lingered in the back of his mind. Terrel blinked and shook his head – in and out, in and out… He felt marginally better than before, though his mind remained fixed hard in a distorted state.

“Mother,” he said gently, “return to Sawtooth.” He stood, his legs quivering underneath him like a frail, new born deer. He wanted to say many more things that were beyond the line of offence… But he wished not to disturb his mother even more so. So the solider retained his muddled thoughts swarming inside his head. “I,” he said softly, “wish to be alone right now.” He said this with a solemn tone and stepped away from the gentle embraces of his mother. She was to be united with Henadin now; they needed to learn how to survive without each other. It was no longer Channing and Terrel against the world… Now it seemed to be Channing and Henadin against Terrel, swapped the tables… But he had convinced himself that he no longer required the solitary life of a ‘mummy’s boy.’ Channing had Henadin and Terrel had…

Who did he have?

Mae – it was she who would have the honour of his friendship. Although it was not much of an honour, more of a disaster really but for some reason the two had mingled into friendship… And Nova, he was certain that through everything the two would still possess the pleasant company between the two. But no one else, anymore...

He looked behind him once, the world spinning uncertainly and then he walked, towards the direction of Leisure Lake and towards his friend.

“See you soon, mother,” he whispered.

for my head on a silver plate
just a puppet on a lonely string
oh who would ever want to be king?'
