Insanity. Most would say that the definition of this word is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different outcome. Cade could certifiably say that it applied to her random, frequent trips out of the territory. It never failed that when she left, it was with the hope of finding something worthwhile, some connection to another wolf, that might bring her a kind of solace in sharing the responsibility of leading the pack. It had yet to work and the only thing that it seemed to accomplish was to continually rip the bond between herself and her brother while leaving him hanging with the weight of the pack on his shoulders while she went gallivanting off on a whim. If she didn't know any better, she'd say she felt remorseful in her return this time. Surely her brother was through bothering with her. The thought of him deciding that she was a lost cause made her feel a pang of worry. if there was one thing that she had always relied upon, it was the fact that he stood stoically as her rock, always there when she came shuffling back and no better off than when she had left. But she had a dark inkling of a thought in the back of her mind, nagging her that she had pushed him too far this time and repercussions just might be irreversible. That thought terrified her more than anything she had ever faced in her life and made her pace quicken all the more after she hit the border and his wall of fresh markings, once again covering her failure to be present. As she crossed the border, she could hear his call rising in the dark hour of the night, echoing through the land. For the first time in her life, Cade simply stopped moving and took in his voice, listening until the howl faded from even her perception of the sound. It was a very rare thing for her to hear any noise that Quirino made all the way through. Oddly enough, she found it soothing, not that she would ever tell him that.
It's true what they say, that you don't know what you've got until it's gone. Cade missed her family and while it was much subtler, she found that she missed having other members of the pack around as well. Her pace began again once she was done listening to the summons, her feet nimbly carving her path through the pack lands she still very capably remembered the lay of. The distance found its way behind her and without much preamble, she broke into the clearing, trotting in with a jaunty little step. If she'd thought about it, she would have been wise and stopped to smell the air and taste who else was present before appearing, But alas, one couldn't back out of the clearing and re-enter in an attempt to rewind time. That would merely be foolish. So instead, she attempted to cover up her surprise as her eyes settled on a figure she hadn't seen for a very long time. Seline looked, well, her usual ravishing self. Cade nearly had a moment of self consciousness before she remembered that she had no reason to compare herself to her mother. Anger flooded up with the realization that her first instinct had been to admire her mother's appearance rather than consider the myriad of ways her mother's return may be inconvenient. Like for instance, if she wanted the crown back. Cade couldn't say that she was a particularly good ruler, but she also felt that she hadn't really given herself a chance to excel at ruling either. Maybe if she would quit giving in to her wander lust, she'd be able to find out. But for now, her best bet was to be polite in front of the rest of the company and sort out family differences later. So hiding away her confusion, surprise, and every thing else, Cade gave a rather small grin to her mother as if to say, "How lovely," before her mismatch gaze moved to spot Eric.
He looked rather unchanged. It was kind of befitting since Cade knew he was a vampire. She noted the looks he rather covertly sent in her mother's direction and added more questions to her endless list of them. It seemed life always gave her more questions than answers, why start something new now? Feeling oddly disgusted, she began scanning the rest of the group. It was much smaller than the last pack meeting she had witnessed and half the wolves present were loners looking to join. Given how few of the old members had answered the call, it was likely the new ones would receive the opportunity to stay. She had caught the few names offered previously on the wind just as she arrived and tucked them into a separate compartment in her mind for safe keeping. After skimming her gaze over each member in a perfunctory glance, they settled on Quirino. Ever so slowly, she walked over to him. Lifting her maw to his ear, she uttered to very soft words, barely heard, "I'm sorry."
Turning from her crimson sibling, she sidled away to put some space between them before drawing her banner over her spine and looking at everyone else.
"Mother. Eric. Nice to see you again. Since we seem to be going through introductions, those of you who don't know me, my name is Cade and I am your queen if you so choose to stay."
There, she had uttered the words. Now she just needed to wait and make sure neither of her family members decided to question her authority before the new comers. If they did, life may just be rather interesting.
