I'm A Slow Dying Flower
Frost Killing Hour

How many people can honestly say that they’ve been woken up by a fox knocking over a side table whilst ‘playing tag’ with a raven? Phoenix can, and not once or twice has such a thing happened but with an ever increasing frequency and annoyance. Such an increase might unfortunately lead to the need to dispose of the body of a strangled fox. Seriously there are only so many times she can be woken up by a fox knocking something over or breaking something that she can stand. Being woken up by a child crawling into bed with her is entirely different though the continual presence of her daughter waking her up every night does tend to wear a bit on ones nerves especially when your sleep is always interrupted on a morning by loud crashing noises. This morning is the same as so many others and the woman is jolted from sleep as her bedside table crashes to the floor and water, glass, parchment and a candlestick fly into the air before smashing onto the floor along with the cause of the commotion; Loki.

Landing on his side it takes the white fluff ball a moment to roll over onto his stomach and move into a sitting position a large black tail feather clutched proudly beneath his teeth. In an annoyed sleep deprived state it takes Phoenix a moment to work out where the feather has come from, till the flap of wings above her head and some angry squawking clues her in. Dry lips open on a yell when she feels a little head nuzzle into her side and she looks down at the Evelyn shaped lump hidden beneath the covers and her expression softens. How the child manages to sleep through such commotions she’s not sure but she’s grateful for it. Instead of yelling her mismatched eyes fix a glare on the fox and she lets enough of her annoyance seep into their connection that the proud look of success vanishes from the animals face and pricked up ears droop slightly. Pointing a finger at the door of her room the fox slinks out and she can finally turn her attention to the raven that continues to circle overhead.

Once the bird notices the absence of the fox it spirals down and its sharp little talons find purchase on her knee. Holding itself almost regally the bird offers out one of its leg to which she notices the attached note and Phoenix barely holds in a groan. Inwardly swearing to her-self that if it’s anything to do with her praetor duties she may just rip up the paper, let Loki eat the bird and say she never got the message. Relief washes over her as she unfurls the paper and finds an entirely different kind of message. Lips curls into an easy smile and pushing down the covers she gives her daughter a gentle shake. Sleepily the child rubs at her eyes staring at her mother with a confused expression. “Guess what baby?” the woman smiles. The red head tilts her head a little and issues a croaky ‘wha’ noise. “Were gunna go see aunty Ana she has a surprise for us”. The sleepy expression is replaced with a beaming grin broken only momentarily by Loki’s voice from behind the door sounding a, “Does this mean I get to play with Kraar?” Picking up one many books from the floor Phoenix throws it at the door following the bang and answering yelp with a loud ‘NO’.

It is some hours later, after Phoenix had sent the bird back, that the odd trio finally arrive at the commune. After being carried most of the way Evelyn insists now that she’ll walk the rest of the way to Ana’s home. The artic fox is somewhere around either behead or behind Phoenix isn’t sure but neither is she too worried. She’ll know soon enough if he’s causing mischief as always. Pausing at the door to her friend’s home she catches Evey underneath her arms and easily hoists her up so the child can knock and announce their arrival. All the while wondering what this surprise could possibly be.
