I'm A Slow Dying Flower
Frost Killing Hour

Responsibility isn’t something that Loki is exactly known for but believe it or not he actually can be at least slightly responsible. He does have occasions where he tries but ask him about it and you will get fat out denial. The only person who’s allowed to know he can act responsibly is Phoenix; his faerie. No one else needs or has any right to know. Well maybe Phoenix’s children knew… to at least some extent. After all they were pretty much the only reason he was ‘responsible’. Phoenix trusted him to look after them when she was busy or couldn’t herself for whatever reason. Living in shaman had provided lots of times for her to be busy and the fox had been left minding the baby quite literally. Brae had been the first bundle of joy not that the fox had understood that… it had screamed constantly when it was born how was that joy? Plus Brae had come hand in hand with that annoying little familiar who had plagued his fine white brush with nipping bites. Little git. Phoenix had loved her son though and that was all that had mattered to the fox. It had been enough cause for him to help watch and look out for the small faerie boy after all. Not that now they saw Brae incredibly often. He had the same spirit as his mother had at that age and he loved to explore, it had been wrong to keep him with them selfishly.

Loki knew it hurt his faerie when her son had left more than she’d let on. Still it didn’t mean that they didn’t hear from his he sent messages as often as he was able and he’d return on occasion when he could. When his sister was born he’d stayed for a few weeks and given her a little bracelet of white shells she’d never taken off. His mother had received a similar trinket a white shell necklace which she wore almost constantly. Still Brae hadn’t stayed forever and when he left again that had meant Loki had taken over Evey watching duties. Duties which had become steadily longer once they’d moved to the castle. Phoenix had claimed it was a more stable environment for Evelyn and was easier for her to deal with her praetor duties. The fox on the other hand was fairly sure she hated it there just as much as he did. She wanted to be back in the mountains or exploring wherever her feet took her. She claimed things were more complicated than just doing what they wanted. Loki settled for calling her an idiot when she wasn’t in earshot. Anyone else he would say it to their face but his faerie was just special in that regard.

Most times, like this time, he couldn’t help but think she was lucky to have such a wonderful patient familiar like him. Really who else would have the patience to watch over a small red-headed child who insists on wearing a beanie hat pulled low over her ears indoors and she always pulls on her sleeves till they cover her hands and then somehow he gets the blame for it. There are far more interesting things to play pull-y with than a child’s top but did his faerie listen? Of course she didn’t. So he had to watch the child pull at her sleeves whilst looking out the window at god knows what whilst sitting on the cold stone floor of a castle corridor he had no desire to stay in. In short the fox’s mood was even worse than usual.

When eventually the girl falls back and sits properly on the window seat he jumps up next to her and settling his head in her lap watches as she pulls at the bracelet her brother gave her. “Oki how longs mummy gunna be this time?” For some reason the girl has yet to master saying his name properly not that, that’s the most irritating thing he can think of her doing. The most irritating thing involves baby clothes and the need to fake amnesia. “Don’t know Evey but as quick as she can you know she hates that paper stuff”. The girl pulls a face and returns to staring glumly out the window. Both he and Phoenix had attempted to explain why she couldn’t always be around, that she had to work. Still Evey would insist on hanging around near her mother’s office and Loki being a good familiar would oblige and look after her. Today though was proving intensively irritating as he once more watched her pull on her sleeves attempting to hide the red skin from view. Give him the mountains and rabbits to chase or a big stupid lion called Kopa to annoy any day.
