Enocra Woodland
Pine, spruce and firs alike...

Amissus is older and he holds more scars. He looks like a wolf built for battle but he's probably known this his whole life. I, on the other hand, only figured out my true calling halfway through life. I was trained as an assassin, not built for war and battle but for speed, agility, stealth. Scars were seen as failures until I changed the game up. My master couldn't understand my new path but over time, he came to accept it since I brought only success to his brotherhood. He was a great teacher but in the end, I think I showed him a thing or two. At some point, I find myself wondering if Amissus has any children. At his age, he must surely have bunked down with a female. He may not be the mates for life type, but he's a male and males have hormones. He can't be as old as he is with no progeny to look forward to. Of course, that's none of my business so I keep it to myself. I move away from the subject of Vague and Vidar, mostly because it only seems to spark flames of anguish in his eyes when I mention the two. I don't see how he can be mad at Vidar but I also don't see him getting mad at Vague because he's a pack mate and Amissus seems pretty loyal. Either way, it's not my place to convince him of an opinion not his own so I let it drop. We turn the subject to his catapult. I wander around it, checking out the work he's done but it's like a different language to me. I don't get it. I hear his chuckle when I ask him how it works, eyes glancing up to watch him go pick out a rock from the ground. He tells me that it can be the difference between life or death. I flick one ear back, uncertain that it's this important but I'm pretty open minded so I pay attention anyway. He looks at me and I nod, to let him know he can go on. I'm listening. He shows me how to move the wood, using it to aim. I pay extra close attention to this so I don't want to be a dummy my first time using it. I want to make it look like I know what I'm doing because I take pride in everything I do. The second rule make me smirk but I'm not laughing at him. I don't think it's a joke or anything like that. I'm sure that sucker would hurt pretty bad at this close range if I didn't keep my head back. He puts the rock down and tells me it's all about strength and weight. Good thing I have both of those. Then he slams his paw down on the wood, sending the rock flying. I watch it fly through the air until it disappears. He steps aside then and I'm sure he's waiting for me now. Frowning with concentration, I nod at him in thanks for the instructions before stepping up to the contraption. I carefully choose a rock from the ground, placing it just so on the wood. I look off into the distance, choosing a large oak as my target. I look from the wood to the tree a few times, moving the wood a little bit at a time until it seems just right. I even reposition the rock a couple times just to make sure it sails perfectly. Finally I hold my paw up and with everything in me, I slam my paw down, sending it sailing. The rock slides against the side of the trunk, skidding down the bark before bouncing off. My lips tighten in disappointment but I guess I shouldn't have been looking for it to hit perfectly the first time. None the less, I don't think I did too bad. I glance back over at Amissus as he states that it was a good share. I nod in approval, offering him a friendly smirk. "Good share, indeed." |
