If Tristan had been able to face-palm, then he probably would have done, or, at least, he would have been very sorely tempted. Unfortunately (or perhaps luckily) he found himself unable to do so, since his good arm was trapped under Morveren. Strictly speaking, it was not entirely the little creature’s fault, she just happened to be sitting in such a way that the sheet had become stretched tight, and the prince’s movement was restricted accordingly. He contented himself instead by regarding his friend with an amused expression, allowing Thoth to talk himself out. When the other boy had finished, Tristan raised a single eyebrow, the edges of his mouth turned upwards, and shook his head. “That’s not what I meant,” he said, “you’re being too literal.” Morveren finally moved as Thoth extracted the sheet from her mouth, freeing the Prince’s arm in the process. He pushed himself up further against his pillows and waited for some sign of dawning comprehension from his friend. It never came.

Tristan sighed and glanced over at Celidon, whose eyes told the prince that the cu-sith was as amused by the situation as he was. The big green dog jumped up onto the bed by Tristan’s feet and moved quickly to nudge Morv back onto the bed when she came close to falling off the edge. His tail bashed loudly against the bed frame, and seconds later he lay down a little sheepishly, glancing at Tristan expectantly. “No one else can read her, because she’s your familiar,” the prince explained patiently to his friend, “that’s how she found you, and that’s why you don’t recognise her as a native Shaman species. She’s like Cel...only aquatic.” A grin followed, as he waited for Thoth’s reaction. “Think about it,” he pressed, “it just fits.”

It was something of an achievement to know something Thoth didn’t. The Prince was bright enough but it was a more applied intelligence and he was never likely to have the inclination to pursue subjects with as much rigour or thoroughness as his friend. He preferred athletic activities, and was more likely to come up with his better ideas on the fly. It said something about their friendship however that on that particular occasion Tristan’s tendency to show-off was somewhat muted. It wasn’t a victory to have come to a conclusion before Thoth, he was just glad he was able to solve the mystery, to help. “Please tell me you’ll stay for dinner,” he implored, “I’ll ask them to bring up a second tray. If I have to eat up here on my own again, I think I might actually start climbing the walls.” He paused...realising what he had said, and hoped that Thoth wouldn’t take that literally too. “I’m sure we can find something for her too,” Tristan continued, stroking the little creature as it burred endearingly “...do you know what she eats?”
