A direct ancestor, Maria Blanchard, was born in Gibraltar in 1820. Her baptismal record shows her father as Juan Blanchard, born in about 1784 in Gibraltar (although the 1834 Census says Spain) and her grandfather as Antonio Blanchard, born in Mahon, Menorca. The diocesan archives in Menorca have no record of a Juan (or Joan in Catalan), but they do have a record of the baptism of a sister and the marriage of a brother (the parents are the same); Margarita Blanchart on 10th April 1782 and Rafel Blanchard on 19th February 1803. In both records the father is Antonio Blanchard. There is no record of Antonio Blanchard and archivist suggests that he was an English or Irish soldier and possibly Protestant. He could have been French, of course, as they were also involved in Menorca. Can anyone help me with a Blanchard in an English regiment that was in Menorca in mid- to late- 1700s?
