Arthur chuckled, “You’re not in any trouble,” he reassured Thoth with a small smile once the boy had finished his rather hasty attempt to excuse himself. “Stephen’s father has donated a new tapestry, Tristan has already confessed his involvement in the disappearance of the buns, and I don’t know anything about any bats.” The King paused and looked thoughtful for a moment, “thank you for sharing the location of the cat though, I am sure the cook will be delighted. I can send over some guards to fetch him back this afternoon.” The King’s eyes glinted knowingly, but were equally well endowed with good-humour which served to reinforce his original statement. Boys would be boys after all...even if most boys didn’t turn their bedrooms into areas that appeared to be half-nest half-laboratory. That, as far as Arthur’s experience went, was unique to Thoth.

“Unfortunately,” the king continued after a pause in which the mouse scurried back over his boot, “it’s rather more complicated than that.” It was difficult to know how best to proceed. Thoth was bright, and was acutely aware of who his mother was, and that meant that he had probably considered the possibility that those who had been associated with Aura would come looking for him. Arthur knew too that after Gawain had gone missing, and Tristan had come to realise what that had meant for his future, that his own son had been worried and afraid. Thoth however, unlike Tristan, did not have any parents left to guide him or prepare him, and so the feeling was likely to be multiplied significantly. They were venturing into uncertain waters. “I had a visitor today,” Arthur began, looking Thoth in the eyes, “from earth. A man named Sir Walter Smythe, he was a representative of the Auran church.” He paused for a moment, adjusting his grip on the wooden box in his hands, “he requested that I allow him to escort you to Earth.” The king’s expression had taken on a serious edge, but he was careful not to appear too grim. It was an attempt to convey the message that whilst the situation was a serious one worthy of consideration, it was not one to which there was no solution. In short, everything about Arthur, from his expression, to his voice, to his body language, was intended to strong and reassuring. “I told him you were not going anywhere that you did not want to go.”

The King paused. “My first question for you is whether or not you wish to hear what Sir Walter has to say, or if you already know how you wish to proceed?” He suspected that he already knew the answer, but it would have been wrong of him to proceed under his own assumption without Thoth’s confirmation. “I want to help you,” he reassured the boy, “and I will do everything in my power to ensure that your wishes are respected.” Arthur paused, leaving a space of silence for the boy to fill if he so wished, before pressing on. “However, I am also here to offer you my advice, and I can only hope that you will take it, but again, I will not force it upon you.” Offering Thoth an encouraging smile, Arthur gave a gentle prompt, “in the most general terms then, do you know what you would you like to do?”
