we shall keep the shield wall fast

Tristan elbowed Bryar in the ribs as he pushed himself into the small space between her and the window frame, “move over, fatty,” he said. He paused, turning to grin at her with a glint in his eyes before he flicked them back out of the window and up to Thoth. He was hanging from the east wing that ran through the courtyard opposite the back walls of the stable block. Most of the rooms on the upper floors were not used at night, acting as offices during the day. The servant and guard quarters were on the lower levels, which explained why it had taken the parrot so long to find help. A cold wind was picking up, after the warmth of his own room Tristan found it sharp against his cheeks and his eyes watered a little. The nearest window to Thoth was small, much smaller than the prince’s bedroom window. There were others nearby of similar dimensions. Tristan knew what that meant, and his grin broadened.

“We’re coming Thoth!” Tristan shouted back glancing at Bryar to see how she would take his friend’s rather caustic retort. The prince took a step back and curled his fingers into the fabric of her top, pulling her back away from the window. “We’ve got no choice,” he told her, “we’re going to have to climb over. How sweaty are your hands feeling?” They moved back towards the window and Tristan peered out in order to find the best way to get to Thoth. Bryar’s vine was still in place. That would do. Withdrawing back into the room again Tristan turned to his friend with another grin, “ladies first,” he said, suspecting that she would resent being referred to as such, and so, just in case he added, “unless you’re scared, of course. I can go first if you are.”

The prince stood back to watch until Bryar had disappeared from the window, before turning on his heel and heading towards the door. Celidon stood up from his place in the corner and trotted after his fairy. The door opened with a creaking of hinges and Tristan peered out into the corridor beyond checking for any guards. He couldn’t see any, he couldn’t hear the sound of boots against the floorboards or the flickering light from their torches. Excellent. Tristan left his room and ran down the corridor to his right, keeping most of his weight on his toes in order to stay quiet. He kept going straight, phasing through the wall at the end. It was the quickest way and cut out a lot of corners. Finally, Tristan reached a spiral staircase and jogged up it a little way before leaning out of the nearest small window. A little further. He ran up another twenty steps and then stopped.

Bracing himself, Tristan leaned forwards, pushing his arm through the wall until his hands met with Thoth’s back. Quickly, he pushed the rest of his upper body through the wall and closed his arms tightly around his friend’s waist. Tristan pushed off the wall with his foot and threw all of his and Thoth’s weight backwards, allowing gravity to do the rest. His friend slipped through the wall and the pair of them fell into a heap on the stairs. The Prince climbed hurriedly to his feet, dusting himself down and looking at Thoth with a broad smile. “She’s going to murder me,” he laughed, “but at least you can’t say I never did anything for you.”
