Ruieze Fields

Open fields and soft grass...
Ruieze stretches far in the midlands of Moladion, laced with streams that feed into Diveen and out of Asteraia at times. The fields are vast, filled with wildflowers and tall, soft grass; trees are sparse, as are rocks, but one can find small shrubs to hide amongst, and the grass itself. To the south of the fields, a Ruieze River widens, and the ground becomes sandy. There is a small, grassy island that can be reached from the banks, with water-birds often congregating on the island rather than the riverbanks.

I watch her watching me. I can see her sizing me up, weighing her options: should she try to run? Or should she just accept things as they are? In the end, it seems, she understands her situation. She is compromised, and too easily overpowered, to risk anything so foolish as fleeing. I keep my post at her side, slowly accompanying her through the darkness as she limps toward home.

I don’t want to take her to Diveen. I don’t want to go anywhere near Diveen. It is selfish and spiteful and so characteristically me that I don’t want to do the one thing that will bring her relief. But her voice tugs at something in me, implores me to see her safely home. To Diveen. Into the hands of my blood-sworn enemies. I hold my peace, feeling it best to say nothing until my thoughts are organized again.

A moment. Some space. I need to think. I pause, letting her move ahead. If I could just get her smell out of my nose! Her voice out of my ears! But she overwhelms me. I can feel her in my chest like a weight, tugging me in her direction, urging me to keep her close. I can’t DO this! As she fades into the trees, I struggle with myself, and then the answer is right in front of me.

SAQR!

My name is not a plea this time, but a panicked shriek, and it does not sit well in my stomach. I lurch forward without a second thought, out of the clearing and into the shadows. The briefest of walks brings me to Katsumi, inert on the frozen ground. I nudge her with my paw, just to make sure she isn’t dead – damn – and that’s when inspiration strikes me.

She’s at my mercy.

If you want my help, we do this my way. Relax or this will hurt much more than it needs to,” I warn. Then I reach down and grip the scruff of her neck with my teeth, tossing the slight weight of her torso into the air and ducking low to catch her on my back. After some shifting, she is positioned evenly across my broad shoulders, and I turn to move back the way I came. She won’t see Diveen this night. The decision was never hers.
