we shall keep the shield wall fast; thoth

Thoth hugged him. Tristan was taken by surprise and stood frozen for a moment, his arms held a little awkwardly. He hadn’t been hugged by a male friend before, in fact the only man who had embraced him over twelve years was his father, and even then it was not a particularly regular occurrence. What the prince could understand however was the sentiment, and that understanding allowed him to recover quickly. He closed his arms around his friend and patted him on the back until they broke apart again. “Not as wet as you,” he shrugged, smiling again as he tugged a little at his soggy shirt, the patches of wet turning a darker shade of green than the rest. “We should probably do something about that...” Cafall jumped up at his master’s leg, his front paws resting against Tristan’s calf. The Prince bent down in order to scratch his ear, before glancing back up at Thoth. “Grandfather gave me them,” he explained as Hodain trotted down the corridor in order to sit beside his brother, “the smaller one’s Cafall, the bigger Hodain. They’re currently in trouble with the cook too.”

The prince straightened up again, leaving the Hodain to jump on top of Cafall, until the two were rolling around in a bundle of paws, legs and ears. Tristan laughed before attempting to separate them gently with the toe of his boot. He ended up with Cafall chewing on the end of it. “Can you...?” Tristan asked Thoth, waving his hands around a little in an exaggerated impression of Thoth using his water bending. They could have gone down to the kitchens and spent some time by the stove. A lot of the servants liked him so they probably could have eaten some cake and biscuits too, but the cook and her famous rolling pin foiled that plan. The other option would have been to try and sneak Thoth past Nimueh in order to try and get hold of some clean dry clothes (from what Tristan had heard about Thoth’s room he doubted whether his friend kept them in there) but there was always the chance that she would catch them and start asking questions. Thoth was probably keen to avoid those, and Tristan wasn’t convinced that the tale of what had happened in the kitchen would not have reached her.

“Let’s get out of here,” the prince suggested with a broad grin, “we could go for a ride. Have you ever been on any of the forest trails?” He wasn’t sure how far Thoth’s riding had progressed since they had last been riding together, but he imagined that being able to talk to Junebell offered a distinct advantage. The idea got them away from the castle too, which meant they would be clear of Tarquin and the others all afternoon. He could deal with the other boy in the morning, then Thoth wouldn’t have to worry anymore. “You could crash in my room tonight if you want,” the prince added, struck by a sudden idea, “you know, food, drink, stories, it’ll be fun.”
