Enocra Woodland

Pine, spruce and firs alike...
Dense coniferous forests cover the woodlands, with clearings, paths and the occasional wildberry shrub throughout. Pine, spruce and fir make up much of the forest in the east, with the forest becoming swampier in the west towards Mecor Valley. In the west, cypress trees dominate, with fallen trees creating bridges across and throughout the stillwaters.

His eyes on her. No matter where she looked, they seemed to follow. That startling intensity they carried for her, and – let it be true! – only her. It sent sparks straight to her toes. It sent electricity through her and into the dirt beneath her paws. The trees, even, seemed to revel in the reuniting. A warm breeze fluttered past them, carrying him to her before they ever came close to one another; it suggested, even as she desired it, that they should touch. That they should ignore everything and simply…be. And then - oh, her name on his breath. She shuddered.

He did the thing she didn’t dare to do: he closed the distance between them. The awkward, terrified space that separated them in air and time and experience. He closed it and the smell of him in her nostrils was exquisite. The warmth of him stole her breath and quieted all the questions that racked her. She forgot all of it, just having him so close was enough. She took in the familiar scent of him, rushing the memories away and replacing them anew. He was quiet, she was quiet, and they were together and it was perfect.

He watched her, inquisitive now, and she returned his sheepish grin – it seemed they were both shaken by the sudden intensity of their need for each other. She pulled away, naturally, in an attempt to keep her powerful emotions in check, but he was having none of it. Sen pulled her toward him with a gentle touch, and they locked eyes. Hers, strained from fighting persistent tears, and his, warm and pleading, met and hovered silently for what seemed a long time.

Why couldn’t she pull herself together? It was so unlike her to be this open about her emotions. She had never been cold, but she’d always kept them under control. The tears finally broke away as they looked at one another, and she would have glanced away again, but for the whine that crept out of him. It stopped her. It hurt her. His distress was painful, and she pressed herself into him as though he were a ghost, bound to disappear at any moment.

Stay with me, please.

She stiffened against him, eyes staring into the fur of his creamy shoulder. No one had ever asked her to stay before. No one had ever followed, and no one had ever asked her to stay. Was it possible, really possible, that the same one she wanted to stay, could also want her to stay? She took a breath, a short step back, and watched him in silence for a moment. There was nothing to decipher. A genuine want, a need to have her near him, was all that she could find in his eyes and on his face.

Her lavender eyes lit up. Her cinnamon tail waved gently back and forth. She smiled: a deep, grateful and relieved thing. And in a moment that she could share with no one but Sen, she darted forward again, pressing her face into his fur, dragging her tongue against his cheek, quivering against him as she allowed herself to believe. “I couldn’t…I don’t…” Words were difficult. She struggled to answer the simple request, even though everything about her actions suggested that it was all she could have asked for. Her thrilled breaths came short, distressing the lives within her womb; they began moving in earnest, protesting against all the excitement.

A brief pause, to think and to calm the little paws inside of her, was sufficient to put together an appropriate reply. “I’m here, Sen.” It was a whisper, spoken into the folds of his ivory fur, but she knew it would be enough. Somehow she knew it was what he needed to hear: she wasn’t leaving, either. He was here for her, for the little strangers inside of her, and next time she intended for them to be his. She pulled her face away from him, allowing her bright eyes to revel in the warmth of his own. They danced again, for the first time in so long, and it was all she could do to keep from leaping around.

Of course, there was more. Must there always be more? She wanted him to know, before it got out of hand, that there were…circumstances. Things she didn’t fully understand herself had come into her life. “Sen,” she began nervously, “I’ve been imprinted on.” She allowed him some time to take that in. “He’s a Demon. From Iromar. When we first met, he intended to kill me – but then there was a bear, and he…

The flow of information was strange on her tongue; it nearly choked her. She didn’t enjoy reliving the details, even for the sake of Sen’s sanity. If he left now it would destroy her, and yet she had opened herself up to the hurt: now was his chance to run. It was really over for her. Their fated meeting had ruined her. The girl who never stayed would stay; she wanted nothing more than to stay! Beyond that, she wanted him to stay. She had run – she had done her best to fight it. But their time apart had been the test, and she had failed. She had, without question, found someone she couldn’t do without.

The idea was excruciating, and she did everything she could to keep the truth from her face, but her eyes – those damned eyes – betrayed it all. They darkened even before she offered him the out: “I know it’s complicated…and if you don’t want to…” She choked on the end of the sentence, tearing her eyes away and to her own paws; it was too painful to even fully consider. She was heavily pregnant, and she came with a certain baggage. She was not the dancing, flighty girl he’d met months ago. There was more, now. “I’ll understand.

She wouldn’t. She’d grieve, and suffer, and cry. But she was trying.

All for love of him.
