Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

She listened intently to his small musings regarding the packs. He knew roughly the same amount as she did, though he had gotten farther than she in regards to actually visiting a pack. Briefly, she wondered how critical he was of his surroundings, and whether the place he had seen really was as unremarkable as he claimed. Glancing around, she voiced her opinion on why the landscape could vary so greatly. “It seems that the land changes often here. The female I met spoke fondly of Glorall and its location.” As she spoke, she stared across the crater as if to emphasize her statement.

Though he had not said anything of its composition, and though Elowen knew nothing of the landscape, she would have disliked living in Iromar as well. Forests and hills were where she was most comfortable, and for this reason she had stayed around the crater since her arrival. Having found a topography in which she was comfortable, she was rather unwilling to uproot yet again.

Her eyes narrowed once again as the black male rose to his feet to circle around her. Rather than craning her neck every which way to watch him, her ears followed him, angling in the direction of his footsteps. She had not entirely let her guard down; she had simply relaxed for a moment. His next requests caused her to look in his direction sharply. They seemed to be odd questions, and some she thought she had answered. Her time here had been too short to know of the habits of the wolves here. The conversation she currently participated in, though unexciting, was the longest she had ever spoken with another since her arrival.

Despite her mental distress at his inquiries, she kept her relaxed sitting position even as he continued to circle her like a vulture awaiting the death of its target. “I have told you what I know. Being familiar with a place is different than knowing the secrets of its inhabitants. Besides, I really do not know what information you seek. These wolves have their customs different from what I am used to, but I have seen nothing out of the ordinary.”

Yet even as she said it, an unusual occurrence resurfaced in her memory. That last large gathering had been interesting. There was no real purpose to it; it appeared as though the rest of them, like Elowen, had simply stumbled upon each other. But that was not the unusual aspect; what was strange was the way some of the men had abruptly stopped what they were doing to being either staring quite intently at a particular female, and even following said female around on occasion. It was very peculiar. “Though there is one thing…I stumbled upon a group of wolves several moons ago. Nothing was off until some males suddenly began to stare at and follow females around. The looks on their faces were…helpless, I suppose. It was rather odd, but I do not know the meaning of it.”
