Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob Bowlessandhill cranes and more

nearly every morning this week i have been wakened by the bugling of sandhill cranes; this morning, i had the opportunity to see two parents with one golden haired (feathered) youngster feed in the field to the north of my property; there were still some golden downy feathers on its back as well

also these days, hummingbirds are eating me out of house and home; they have consumed nearly a litre of nectar in about 5 hours; so far the highest number i've seen at one time is 9; most are females or fledglings but the two males on this one side of the house are getting along well; the two males on the other side of the house are not nearly as cooperative about their feeders

with fewer greedy grackles around, i have started hanging out a couple of feeders which the goldfinches, purple finches and rose-breasted grosbeaks are enjoying
