It was fairly safe to say that Thoth's talents with the garden lie more in the realms of destruction than creation.

He has spent most of the morning trying desperately to arrange the flowerbed in a nice way, but it still looks like a horrendous mess. Getting the flora to sit in pretty little rows the way Nimueh's did is next to impossible - some are too close together, half-hidden beneath each other, and others are so far apart that there are great gaps of soil. He shuffles a couple of pansies around hopefully and falls upon an arrangement which, while not fabulous looking, is a vast improvement over everything he's tried before. Deciding that this is the best it's ever going to look, Thoth leaves the flowers be, picks up a little wooden cross near his foot and pushes it firmly into the soft soil. The cross, made from two small planks hammered together, has writing on which has been carefully etched in with a chisel:

HERE LIES ATKISS,
THE BEST SNAKE IN THE WORLD.

Thoth dusts off his hands, scrambles to his feet and takes a step back to take a proper look at the little grave. It's only tiny - Atkiss, his late pet Garter snake, had been buried that morning in a shoebox - and a little messy, tucked away in a barely-visited corner of the castle grounds, but Thoth hopes that Atkiss appreciates it, wherever he is. The snake, who had originally been wild caught, had passed quietly away of old age the night before. As he stares down at the little flowerbed with its carefully constructed grave marker - the best he can do - Thoth feels a familiar lump rise in his throat and he rubs his eyes forcefully. Don't cry. Some of the other boys might be around.

As it turns out, he's half-right. The thundering sound of hoofbeats captures his attention, and he glances up to see a mounted hunting party galloping off towards the forest; near the lead, he can just about spy the confident figure of his best and only friend, Prince Tristan. The rest of the party look like other boys of a similar age. Thoth turns away from them, swallowing the bitter taste in his mouth, and catches sight of another boy - one a few years older - standing by the closed front gate which marks the entrance to the castle grounds. He hesitates for a moment. Since the Aurans showed up on Shaman and threatened to take him away, Thoth isn't supposed to talk to strangers in case any of them are Aurans in disguise trying to hypnotise him into wanting to go to Earth. In fact, for his protection, Tristan's grandfather, Mallos, had erected a magical barrier over the castle grounds to prevent Thoth from being able to leave, and to prevent anyone with intention to harm him from being able to enter. The measures are there for his safety, he knows... but the fresh memory of Tristan and his friends riding out into the forest, unrestricted and carefree, causes a sense of recklessness to overcome the precocious thirteen year-old. He shoves his hands moodily into his pockets and strolls over towards the gate.

The guy is tall - it's the first thing to notice about him. Thoth is only thirteen, and is small and slight for his age, so the stranger towers over him. One arm hangs limply by his side and, oddly, both of his eyes are different colours. Thoth tries not to stare as he approaches the gate and taps the iron bars to get the man's attention.

"Hey," he says suspiciously. "What do you want?"

thoth is 13, small and a little fragile-looking; he has an expressive heart-shaped face, coffee brown eyes and straight, fine hair which is an indeterminate shade between brown and blonde. whatever he's thinking is usually very obvious from body language and facial expression xD

i'm technically away right now so i'll only be able to reply when/if i can until tuesday when i'm back officially. just saw your post and couldn't resist<3
