Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob Bowleschimney swifts

Last night we were treated to a delightful show over the Museum of Temporary Art in Victoria Road. Just before dusk, 6 chimney swifts swooped above us in formation, chattering away in what sounded like whoops of joy. Sometimes 4 would fly one way, 2 would go the other, then they'd meet up and off they'd fly together making great arcs in the sky. They were brilliantly co-ordinated, and it seemed that one of them had to have been directing the show. After about 15 minutes of blowing off steam, like young kids' last-minute antics before getting into bed, they suddenly made a different sound. We watched mesmerized as they slowly began to make their way down from high up in the sky. Then, one by one, taking turns, each bird dropped feet first into our back chimney. And so to bed. It was magical.
