Bardsey fruit - when do you know it's ripe? IP: 81.138.13.109 Posted on September 6, 2013 at 09:10:34 PM by KateO
My Bardsey was a maiden in 2009 and this year was the first it was allowed to fruit but only 50% of the little apples it had on its boughs a month ago. It had 6 until yesterday when 3 came off in my hand. I don't think they're ripe though as much paler green than the website's photo and only a little pale red striping. It's wet and windy in the orchard on the side of a hill about 1100ft above sea level here in mid-Wales and it was 'cottoned' against bullfinches as were the rest of the 20 fruit trees here of the same age. Not many fruit but the tree is not 4 feet and of the other trees, only 4 have fruit.
I'll try to download the photo and post it here. Would be good to see other photos of Bardsey fruit. Has anyone tried cooking it? If I wrap thes 3 up somehow can I ripen them more? Replies:
