Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesRe(2): Monarch on Wylie

The migrating population of Monarch butterflies have gone up and down over the years. We are now at an all time lower with numbers lower than they ever have been before. This is due to a drought last year in early spring in Texas then cold weather this spring which delays the milkweed. There have been low numbers in Ontario this year for most of the year. However, the last generation of Monarchs have been very successful in Ontario and more will be migrating south to Mexico than we have observed all summer. They have many perils ahead of them like insecticides on the corn and changing weather patterns but I would not count this tough little butterfly down and out at this time. I think they will bounce back like they have this fall in Ontario late in the season. I had daily counts of Monarch in the double digits this September.
