they won't know you now
They were related, in a way. A link, some sort of strange connection started to stretch between the pair, odd and dark. A thin web of gossamer silk that hung like a light shadow, the beginnings of sleep deprived bags under the eyes, a nearly faded bruise—something like that. Maybe that was their similarity, maybe it was their difference, all coming into play. That sounded right—similarities and differences between the pair enough to string them together. Dimitri didn’t know what it was, quite yet. He didn’t feel it yet… and he’s enchanted by that. It’s crept up on him, and he has no way of knowing.
A low twitch of the tail, a dry sort of humor tugged around his shoulders. Dimitri doesn’t realize how his body settles closer to Devlin’s, closer… and yet he’s still so far away. He knows what it’s like to be so far away, and how is he to feel about it? How is he to feel now that he leans closer to the man and refuses to look directly at him. He doesn’t know how to feel about this strange closeness, this bizarre oddity that’s become… them. A collective pronoun, and yet they are a pair. They are two.
And he doesn’t mind being two with Devlin. “Nowhere I’d rather be.” The creature notes softly, a rumble in his narrow chest. There’s no way of telling what runs through Dimitri’s head, and maybe that’s why he’s so bizarre. Bizarre fits him well, though. Dimitri edges ever closer to the other man, though it’s subtle. He’d be mortified if Devlin noticed, if he rejected him. Maybe that was Dimitri’s greatest fear—rejection. As the other creature speaks of strong and healthy, Dimitri laughs outright. Healthy, maybe physically… mental was always something else. Mental would always be something else. As far as strong went… Dimitri didn’t know about that. Maybe that’s why he laughed.
“Destitute? Never. Just… a little alone. I’ve been accepted into a pack, have been for a while… just needed to get out a little.” The creature sighs, an expansion and contraction of his ribcage. That’s all. His eyes play on Devlin’s face, watching for a reaction. “You’re the one that looks destitute.” Alone. He’d been so alone for so long now. Was this what company had always felt like? Dimitri doesn’t feel like any more of a man, at least any more than he had, but he did feel lighter. Something in the company of the other creature, the winding around of a shadow that filled him up with a brilliant spark… yes. He did enjoy it.
