The sweet, innocent flutter of words made Devlin's grin deepen. The off-eyed beast raised his head and slackened his posture, giving his tail an amiable wag.
His mind was a constant flicker of electricity, a collection of gears and wires which clicked and hummed and worked at every moment. Immediately he began to pull and shape himself into a mirror image of the orange-eyed stranger. His eyelids drooped, his hackles fell flat, his black lips dropped to cover the hideous teeth which had only a moment before been gleaming viciously.
It was a marvelous transformation -- occurring so quickly that one might question whether he had not been so agreeable-looking all along...
He was a master of lies; he obsessed mindlessly over the idea of working his way under the skin of his peers, fanatically piecing together every observation to form a growing understanding of character and personality, weaknesses and desires. He was an attentive creature, seeking and filing away every infinitesimal bit of information that he could possibly gather -- details which might be easily overlooked by any other.
Devlin observed the way Nootau stood, the slight twitch of finer muscles in his face as he spoke, the way he slid his tongue easily over his lips to clear away the dripping blood.
