When Everchime inquired his name, Sin nodded to her in confirmation. He was glad to know he was memorable; it gave him a sense of pride to be worth the space in another’s brain. This thought vanished when Sin came to his terrible realization of what he had stalked on his first attempt to hunt alone. Her laughter, though he knew it was kindly and only humorous, served to make him seem to shrink in embarrassment. His head lowered and he couldn’t make eye contact for a few moments. Sin perked up promptly when she offered him words of encouragement, though and he suddenly felt as if his mistake wasn’t as bad as he had thought it was.
Sinclair barked once happily when Everchime agreed to teach him and he bounded around her in a happy-pup dance before she could finish telling him about her favorite hunting place in Glorall. This would be very fun! And good too. He would be more help to his mom and the pack if he could hunt! Tesseract was sure to be proud of him if he continued training on his own and growing his skills even when he wasn’t training with his teacher. Sin grinned widely as he followed in Everchime’s paw steps towards the boarder of the territory. He had passed the field Everchime took him too many times before because he trotted to the border every day and sometimes followed along it for a short time before returning to his mother’s den.
He had seen the furry, long eared prey before because Sinopa had had him eat it before, but he had never hunted them before. Instinctually when he saw one, he would stalk it, but that was as far as he got. He would see how close he could get and then the rabbit always lost him some way or another. He had discovered that they lived in holes in the ground. Very small holes, Sinclair thought. It was a wonder anything could fit in them at all. It must be very crowded in the rabbit dens (he was unaware that rabbits tunneled). Sin sat when Everchime told him to wait to show her that he would.
In a couple of short moments, Everchime returned with a brown fluffy thing in her mouth. Sin tilted his head at her instruction. Rabbits were common? It seemed strange that rabbits would be easily found when Sin only ever saw one once in a while. But, the teacher was always correct, so Sin trusted her information. He nodded to her, to show he was listening. It was kind of… disheartening to realize the solution to his problem was so simple! All he had to do was memorize the scents his nose picked up? Sin sniffed and a wave of scents filled his nose. Well, maybe it would be harder than he thought. There were so many different smells in the world! Each and every species of anything had its own perfume.
Sin shook his head to banish the overwhelming thought from his mind. He only had to memorize a couple of those smells, right? Just the ones that were really important, like rabbit was. Sin asked just to confirm what he had to do, “So… I just smell the rabbit and memorize it?” Sin then trotted up to the dead creature and stuck his nose in it’s fur and inhaled. His mouth watered slightly as the slightly musky, but sweet scent of the small bunny. This is what rabbit smells like, he told himself. He really wanted to eat it! But this was Everchime’s rabbit, and he was far more determined to find one of his own. He smelled the rabbit once more, just to make sure he had the smell, and then he stepped back and looked up at Everchime. He tilted his head and truly asked her this time, “Now do I try and find a rabbit?” |
