Change was long overdue in Spirane. Now that I have learned who is still an active presence within the pack, the ranks have been updated. As I once took time away from the pack, so too now shall Kalseru. Know that she is still second in command of the pack, as is reflected in her rank. Once you are familiar with the new ranking system, if you would like to change positions or move up in the ranks you need only ask. Let this be a time of new life in Spirane, and a promise of great things to come!

When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.

It could hardly be denied that this was quite possibly one of the most awkward situations I had ever found myself in. Despite the fact that I was over the moon about Meryl just being here, I was stunned by the realization that the boy Ceal fawned over was, in fact, him. They had obviously spent quite a bit of time together, which in turn made me realize that Ceal probably knew Meryl better than I did. And I didn’t really like that idea. I wanted to know him as well as, or rather better than, my sister did. “Yes, I…” I nearly said ‘um,’ but then I remembered who I was, what future I was training for. Situations such as these required composure. I could not fail myself now of all times, in front of so many that I wished to remain with me when I someday assumed the throne. “Meryl and I met once before, when I visited Diveen last year.

I could not possibly have been more grateful for Ramiel’s presence than I was when he leapt forward, striking a powerful pose and proclaiming who he was. A smile broke across my face as I watched him. Though I called him my cousin, he was technically my nephew. But we were so close in age, that I felt a more sibling like bond with him rather than that of an aunt. Aunts were meant to be more like an extra (cool) parent. But Ramiel and I were friends, and I knew that we always would be.

My attentions snapped back to Meryl as he spoke again, ears pressed forward in a most keen fashion. Without consciously making the decision to do so, I moved forward a few steps, drawing even with Ramiel once more and then taking another step that drew me ever closer to Meryl. There was still distance between us, Ceal still stood closer to him than me, but we were closer now. My eyes searched for his, hoping to meet his gaze as his tone seemed to change, addressing the business of why he had come. So he hadn’t come just to see me? My ears fell slightly before I remembered myself and pricked them forward once more, hoping no one had noticed. But, at least he had not come just to see Ceal, either.

I glanced at Ceal again, glad to see her broken from the trance of figuring out that Meryl and I already knew one another. She was her happy self again, and that caused my tail to wag faster than it already was. So he was here to study under one of our healers? I wracked my brain, thinking of the wolves here who were skilled in the art of mending. When Ceal mentioned our uncle Godric, I nodded. “You’re right Ceal. There is also Niviaq, who is working towards becoming our head healer. Perhaps, if Alcide has been keeping Godric busy, Niviaq could teach you.” It never got less strange, referring to father by his proper name. Though his name was noble and strong and rolled off the tongue, it did not ring as true as Father did. He was my dad, and that was who he would always be to me. “Spirane and Diveen are long standing allies. I can assure you, you will be welcome here for the season,” I paused for only a moment before adding, “Or longer, if you like it here.” I knew Diveen was his home, but part of me wanted to keep him here for as long as I possibly could. Maybe once his training was complete we could get to know each other better. Watching him, I waited for his reaction. The idea of escorting him away, telling Ramiel and Ceal that I would take him to meet Father and to find a den, was all too enticing. But I could not so casually slough off the company of my sister and cousin. That would be rude, and rude was something I did not like to be unless absolutely necessary.
