At Leisure Lake the sun is always shining and only a few stray clouds roam the open sky; paradise is the one word that really describes it. This beautiful lake is clean and refreshing, the very best place to swim and fish. Pups are known to play here while older wolves watch at the side, engaged in their own activities.

The cold seized Mae’s muscles. Her breath held out against the threat all around her, the airless water she was surrounded by. As the seconds ticked by her strength slipped away, pulling her closer to the moment she’d give in and try to draw in air; the moment the ice would claim her. The femme’s mind drifted, her oxygen deprived brain unable to latch onto thoughts long enough to comprehend what was happening or how she was supposed to fight it. She didn’t want to give in, didn’t want to lose the life she’d built for herself, but as the time she was submerged increased it became harder to keep hold of those thoughts. She wasn’t weak, but she didn’t have the muscle strength to keep herself at the surface long enough to draw the breaths she desperately needed.

As her consciousness began to float away with the water that cradled her body, a sharp pain broke out over her scruff. To her foggy mind, Mae barely registered the feeling, but deep down something told her all was not over. She had to help herself, to fight against the water. Her limbs pushed out weakly as she was dragged up at a speed faster than that which she was able to create. Her calls for help had been answered. Her face broke the surface and she gasped for air, spluttering as a sudden panic set over her in place of the drifting acceptance only moments before. She coughed and struggled, pushing against the icy sides to try and aid the force pulling her up by the scruff. A flash of brown amongst the white washed background and her brain caught up with her situation, kicked into working by the renewed supply of oxygen.

Terrel. She tried to say his name, to acknowledge his presence, but with her body still mostly engulfed in freezing water she couldn’t draw enough strength to get the word out. A whimper left her as the male finally managed to lift her out enough for both her front paws to gain leverage on the ice. The femme clawed at the surface, scrabbling against it and thrashing out with her back legs to try and propel herself out of the water, as Terrel continued to help. Finally she was out, dimly registering as the other wolf collapsed beside her. Mae lay on her stomach, legs sprawled out and pelt so soaked it appeared to be almost black and separated out so that her skin was visible beneath. She shivered there, eyes closed and breath coming out in exhausted pants.

Mae’s body began to relax, going numb and not struggling so much now that the immediate danger was out of the way. Her eyes stayed shut and she didn’t notice that Terrel had moved until warmth spread out across one of her sides, so in contrast to the rest of her temperature that a shudder spread out over her body. The wheels of her mind began turning as her foggy thoughts hooked onto the body heat the other leant. Danger wasn’t over yet; she needed to get to warmth. The male’s words along with her own thoughts brought back the sensations to her mind. The ice clung to her wet pelt as if it would claim her, grasp her and never let her move. The sting along the length of her stomach almost burned and the gentle breeze was like a gale blowing over her.

A whine was her response to him as she struggled to her feet. Limbs shaking and tail tucked between her legs as far as it could go, Mae moved alongside Terrel as they left the ice. The male’s tongue over her forehead spurred her on to keep moving as they stepped into the snow along the lake’s banks. She leant into him, both for the warmth his body provided and in her silent way of saying thank you for saving her. Words failed her as she continued to draw in shaky breaths, but she hoped he’d understand what the gesture meant.

The pair were lucky as they came across a gap in the ground beneath the trees, positioned so that though its entrance was coated with snow the space below was not. Mae breathed a sigh of relief when the winds were blocked as she slid down beneath the ground. The den was small but unused, its size containing its heat, a heat which instantly spread out across the femme’s body. She tried to shake out her pelt, knowing getting rid of the water would help, but the movement was more of a shudder and ended as her legs gave way and she collapsed to the ground. Everywhere ached, particularly the scruff of her neck, her chest and right back leg. Being out of the snow and wind helped and, though it was still cold, feeling was beginning to come back to her. “Terrel...” her voice was little more than a hoarse, shaky whimper, “Thank you, Terrel…” Mae wanted nothing more than to curl into him, be heated by the warmth his body gave off, until she felt she was strong enough to walk.
