The Carden Alvar Christmas Bird Count was held on Saturday, January 4, 2014.
A total of 18 field observers and 10 feeder watchers observed 37 bird species (down from 46 last year) and 2855 individuals (way down from 4482 last year).
New species for the count were 1 Bufflehead, 1 Eastern Screech-owl.
New record highs were Mallard 65 (52 in 13), Bald Eagle 5 (2 in 11), Hairy Woodpecker 57 (54 in 00),Red-bellied Woodpecker 3 (2 in 11), Dark-eyed Junco 140 (114 in 06).
Eight species of mammals were observed (nine last year). New mammal species was 1 Short-tailed Shrew.
No new mammal highs for tied highs were 2 Meadow Voles with 2001, 1 Short-tailed Weasel with 2004.
The total number of mammals observed was 56, down from 103 last year. Very few gray squirrels again this year.
Still water ice cover but fast moving water still open in places. Partly to cloudy most of day. No snow or rain during the day.
