‘Come here’ Danny said, not giving Dylan much of a choice as he dragged him across the room by his wrists. Dylan did his best to extract himself from his sibling’s grip but stopped his struggling when they got close to the candle. Even he wasn’t that stupid. He was about to make some disparaging remark and ask Danny what he intended to do now that he had seen the injuries, but was cut short. His twin answered the unspoken question by producing a little pouch from somewhere or other. Dylan frowned at it, throwing Danny a questioning look, but his brother was too focused on what was inside his little bag.

“What’s that?” Dylan asked, nodding at the little bottle suspiciously. He knew enough about Shaman to be more than aware of the simple fact that potions often meant trouble. Danny however seemed unconcerned, and began to spray the solution onto Dylan’s wounds. It stung, enough to make Dylan bite his lip as his eyes water; but he didn’t cry out. He wanted to be a soldier, and soldiers didn’t complain just because their fingers hurt a little bit.

Ironically, it was Dylan’s own evasiveness minutes previously that made it easy for him to recognise it in his brother and, taking care not to knock the candle; he tugged his hands free of Danny’s grip and dived for the textbook. His hands throbbed a bit as he took hold of the great book and tipped it onto its side so that the spine was pointed upwards at the ceiling. “Med-i-cine” Dylan said slowly, breaking the word up into syllables so that it was easier to read. “What are you learning medicine for?”

The memory hit him like a kick to the gut. He remembered the time when he had fallen down through the branches of the tree in their home on Apeliotes Island and scraped up his arms and legs. His dad had sat him down in the kitchen and used his light magic to heal him. Dylan could still recall his wonder as he had watched his skin repair itself under his father’s glow. The boy threw his brother a curious sideways look, trying to work out if Danny’s newfound vocation was anything to do with their dad... “Is that where you’ve been running off to for the past few weeks?” he demanded, a little hotly. He had been left with only Lunarian for company; the noble boys of the court didn’t want much to do with the brother of the king’s pirate hunter. “I’ve been here on my own and you’ve been off, Aura knows where, reading books about medicine!?
