Tristan, despite what certain adults around court might think, was not stupid. Alethea was one of only a handful of people who had had ever let see beneath the surface of the personality he presented to the world at large. It wasn’t to say that the fun-loving, reckless persona he made public wasn’t really him, it was, and it was a large part of who he was, but it was not all of it. He was perfectly aware of the fact that many of the people he spent his day talking to and interacting with were not true friends. The prince was more than discerning enough for that. The truth was, Tristan didn’t need them to be. If he wanted true companionship then he had his real friends, like Thoth, Grayson, Bryar...and he had thought Thea. The others had understood that sometimes who Tristan was had an effect on how he was, but time and time again he had proved that he could be a good friend when they needed him. Tristan often didn’t care that the people who were paying him attention didn’t know him or even particularly like him, he just liked the attention they gave him; revelled in the opportunity to show off and compete, because that was part of who he was too. He had thought, he had hoped, that Thea had understood that.

"Oh, come on!" Tristan replied in disbelief, "you know perfectly well you were making it very clear that you were upset with me!" A little of his hurt had found its way into his voice as he stared at her with his sharp green gaze, "Neither of us are stupid enough to think that shouting is the only way to be hostile!" It was obvious, so why didn’t she just admit it!? She knew that she had been acting in a way that was so pointedly different to normal that it was bound to send a certain message and to provoke a certain reaction from him. That was how politics and diplomacy worked, and Tristan had been trained in both for as long as he had been able to read and speak.

"Your feelings are hurt!?" he laughed bitterly, shaking his head in disbelief "and how do you think I felt when one of my best friends didn't even bother to come over and say hello on my birthday! This isn’t all on me!" Fuming, Tristan began to relieve some of the frustration that was building in his chest by kicking the very base of the stable door with the toe of his boot, over and over again. He looked at her again, straining to see around horse flesh and caught some of the distress in her expression. There was a natural gentleness deep in his nature that meant that causing others pain was not something he took pleasure in. With great effort, the prince attempted to reel in his temper as much as he could.

"Thea, I'm the prince" he tried to explain, straining to keep the heat out of his voice, "sometimes I have do to things and talk to people I don't really want to because it’s my duty You don't think I'd rather have spent my birthday with you rather than someone like Tarquin or Lawrnece!?" He sighed, finally stopping his assault on the door, "All you had to do was come over, and I'd have had an excuse to get away! What did you want me to do? Stand around with my eyes fixed on the doorway until you arrived? I didn't even know you were there because you didn't tell me!"
