Well, it was that time of year again; autumn. The trees were turning orange and gold and the grasses were browning. Shimza looked at the warm hues with spite from atop her thrown of a gray boulder. Winter was coming and winter was disgusting. It was full of yellow snow and skeletal trees. And worst of all, it was bitter. Shimza’s fur wasn’t made for the cold, it was short and sleek and golden, but not thick. He fur wasn’t the dense wonder of those tundra cousins of hers. Plus, fall meant that she had to let her wonderfully plucked top of her tail grow in to hide her lustrous gray skin beneath. That process was itchy and unpleasant. Shimza rolled her eyes and turned her back on the trees to look out across the craigs.
At least here, winter seemed further off because there were far more rocks than there were plants. The sun heated the flat surfaces of the stones and Shimza’s skin rolled in pleasure at the feeling of warmth on her fur and pads. Well, she had a week before her tail started bugging her and a couple of weeks before blistering winds brought cold from the north. Shimza stood and stretched before she gracefully loped across the uneven ground to a pool of water that was fed by mountain water. She paused at it’s reflective surface, gazing at herself. Oh my, she was a fine specimen of wolf, wasn’t she? She held her chest up and posed for the water as she watched her body form a posture that made her appear more voluptuous than she actually was.
He golden fur shined in the daylight and her eyes seemed alight with devious intent. Shimza frown and then bared her teeth at the figure she was. “That’s right sassy, ‘cause you are so successful with man catching,” Shimza growled at herself. Gorgeous? Yes. Charming? Always. Man? No. The hell did that add up?! Not that Shimza was really so desperate for a hunk of a guy to spend her life with, but she usually was able to find one to have some fun with. But last year?! She’d come out with zero, zip, notta. It’s like the male wolves around were either so morally perfect that they’d never have “a fling” or so evil that the abuse games turned them on. Anyone in between? Not that she’d met. Bleh. Maybe one more winter here and then she’d be gone and off to another place.
Shimza glared at her reflection and then whacked it with a paw. Cold water splattered over her leg. Damnit! Shimza cursed in herself and she hopped into a sunny place to furiously lick away the water that had been splashed over herself. Today was going to be one of those days, huh? Bright, sunny, and everything went wrong.
