Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

Her body feels heavy in my mouth as I swim through the water toward the island, seeking refuge from the dirty tides as I cradle her body against my own. She feels so limp and fear tugs at my insides as I make it to the safety of the land. I wouldn't exactly call it dry but it's much better than where we were. I continue whimpering and calling out to her, nudging her gently with my nose as I try to position her better on land, propping her body up against me as I lie down beside her. I continue speaking to her, telling her to hang on, telling her to stay with me, please don't go.

She stays limp for the longest time, her face peaceful and her eyes closed, looking for all the world like she's sleeping. But something tells me that's a bad thing to be right now after such a hard hit and the fear only rises up more within me as I whine again and nuzzle her forehead, licking her nose and eyes, anything to try to get those beautiful eyes to look at me again.

Finally there's movement, though it's only a twitch at first, it's something and I rejoice within as my ears prick forward. When her eyes finally do open, I bark in my glee, reaching out to touch her cheek gently and give it a swift lick.

"Vega..."

I murmur her name softly, like a prayer, my own eyes glowing with happiness to know she's still alive. When her body starts jarring, I jerk my head back, panic rising in my throat as she starts coughing and hacking. Oh no, is she actually dying now? Did she hurt her lungs when that tree struck her? All the worse case scenarios go through my mind as she starts coughing up water. In between coughs, she whines and every sound tugs at my heart. I press against her as close as I can, trying to soothe her with rubbing my nose gently across he neck, burrowing in her fur as tears prick my eyes. Am I actually crying? I'd deny it if anyone ever asked but I can't stand the thought of losing Vega.

Finally the awful coughing stops and she looks up at me. I meet her gaze, fear still present in my own as I try to make sure she's okay. Finally she whines and presses against me though I can tell by the stiffness of her body when she moves that she's in a great deal of pain. I glance toward the water, knowing she's in no state to move now, let alone go find someone to help her. I might have to do that alone. I whimper at the thought of leaving her before turning my gaze back to hers, a new fire gleaming in my eyes, a fire of determination to save her.

"Don't move, Vega. You don't have to move, I know it hurts you. Just tell me what you want me to do, please. I can go find someone to help you or I can stay here with you until you think you're ready to try traveling. I'll support you all I can but I just need you to tell me what to do. Please, what can I do to save you?"

My voice turns into a plea, my voice a helpless whimper as I bury my head into her fur, trying to wipe away the tears that threaten to spill down my cheeks.
