bay blanketed mare of nowhere

The Bay had done little for Jezibelle except convince the sturdy mare that she did not belong in a traditional herd. As she struck out through the ocean, she reflected on her life and decided without bitterness that she did not belong anywhere. Ignored as a filly and dismissed as an adult unless someone wanted to use her, Jezibelle had never found a place in these islands where she fit. The closest had been when she followed her brother, but after that episode on the Crossing that had resulted in that devil-child, the bay mare no longer trusted that their bloodlines would be enough to keep Rurisk away from her come breeding season. He was aggressive to the bone and she would not risk herself that way again.

Besides, she had no idea where he was. Tinuvel no longer carried his spoor and it was possible, perhaps even likely, that he’d left the islands again. Maybe Jezibelle should follow his example and do the same.

When she touched shore it was not the Crossing as she expected, but somewhere warmer. Jezibelle was in the process of shedding her winter coat still and she knew eventually it’d be too hot for her here. Once again the bay blanketed mare was in a place she didn’t belong. She tossed her head and strode deeper into the island anyway. No point in dragging herself through the ocean when on the other side of this land would be another beach, one that would lead to the Crossing. Maybe she’d try the Peak again and see how well she fit in there, provided that devil-child wasn’t still hanging around.

Jezibelle’s head bobbed lower than her shoulders as she walked at her customary slow pace, eyes on the ground and her thoughts in the clouds. The sun on her back was warm and already she could feel it sinking beneath her dark hide, suffusing her with a false sense of peace. The moon never lied to her, but the sun often did. Jezibelle twisted her ears back and raised her head to look for some shade.
