The Lost Islands
we are the walking dead *
(whoever lives here?)

the coffin is moving
Another thing Asp was very good at was showing up where he was unlikely invited.
After a winter in the Inlet, the red dun stallion had grown terribly tired of snow and ice. He imagined his herd (which had been small but growing steadily) was tired of it too—and that was when he had driven them into the sea toward the crossing. The rest was typical: Asp had spent most of spring and summer trying to keep poaching stallions away from his dwindling herd, enough so that he had lost several pounds of weight and was still covered in hairless stripes from scars.
Winter had come again and Asp had only had Dragonmaw and Ophidia left. They found their winter lands and that was where they stayed, the other herd stallions too busy with their own families or not caring enough to pester them.
Now that it was spring, Asp was shopping for a more appropriate home. He didn't want to live in another arctic wasteland and he didn't want to live in a desert, so that left two options: one was the tropical island and the other was more coniferous. Asp decided on coniferous. He liked the seasons, after all, and didn't want to be caught in a blizzard with nothing on.
So he swam the distance to Luthien and pulled himself from the sea just as the sun was going down. Asp did not creep cautiously into the forest like a more respectful (and possibly smarter) stallion would do—no, he barged in and woke a few sleeping ravens, who cawed angrily and took wing.
If that wasn't a message that the lead stallion (wherever
he
was) had company, Asp didn't know what was.
… So, naturally, he began to make sure he rubbed himself on every tree that he passed.
