so wake me up when it's all over

Birch, rather relaxed on the outside, was feeling again that pinch of... not discomfort, but uncertainty, that made things difficult. Her instinct, when she'd met the man, had been to treat him like a soldier, but then the atmosphere sunk in once more and Birch was reminded, a bit forcefully, that this was a blind date. As in, a date. As in, supposed to be at least a little romantic. Birch swallowed hard, wishing the waitress would bring something along to soothe her suddenly dry throat, but kept her smile friendly. He seemed surprised when she mentioned the Academy, perhaps because he was somewhat new to the position. Birch knew of his position at the Pantheon, having been given the basic rundown on the man thanks to Tor, but she found his pursuit of shaping young minds more... well, more in line with her own choices, really. And their charges would give them something to speak of, at least.

"I've heard that," Birch answered when Mace spoke of Shaman's youngsters entering the academy early. Her eyes sparkled, her expression filled with mixed exasperation and adoration, as Mace made mention of Torram. She hadn't quite forgiven the boy for signing her up, but at least the date wasn't going as poorly as she'd dreaded it would. "Yes, that's right. Tor's training under Mr. Greyson at the Academy now. He'd debated taking your classes, actually, but changed his mind when he realized it would mean even more training than what I already put him through."

Birch couldn't help but chuckle a little bit at that. Her charge was not exactly the warrior type, but had an adventurous spirit that often tempted him to take risks. For about an hour he'd heatedly insisted he was going to be a wonderful warrior, fighting monsters and winning women's hearts, but when Birch had told him they could practice that second, he'd quickly changed his mind.

"It's been..." Birch trailed off slightly, her lips quirking a little as she thought over her answer. "An experience. It seems like for every one thing I find that's the same or similar to home, there's three that are completely different. Torram loves it, though. I don't think he's ever stopped talking about everything he's learned since we got here."

Was she talking too much about Tor? she abruptly wondered. The boy was a big part of her life, one part baby brother, one part son, and all friend, but she wasn't sure if it was normal to talk about such things on a blind date. Deciding to turn the tables a bit, she cocked her head to the side again.

"And you? Are you a native Shaman resident, or from elsewhere?" she asked.

Realizing, a bit belatedly, that the tea had arrived, Birch lifted the teapot and gestured towards Mace's cup, waiting for his assent before pouring them both some.
