bittersweet between my teeth

bay blanketed mare of nowhere

She kept walking and felt the sun fall across her body in a slow wave of heat. It wasn’t pleasant here, not with her thick coat, but before she could let her thoughts lapse into her typical murky and nonsensical ideas, the Akhal-Teke with the accent called after her. Jezibelle paused and flicked an ear back before she turned her head to roll one dark eye at Dia.

Her immediate reaction was to lie, and she swallowed it. Of course her brother had a name— although it wouldn’t have surprised her if Kisei had left him nameless, given how little the black stallion cared for his mute son. But Dia wouldn’t know that. She hadn’t been there, in the Forest, and everyone else who had been was dead or gone. But not Jezibelle. She was still here, the last witness to her brother’s tortured life and crimes.

The bay mare blinked and shifted on her hooves. When she spoke, it was as if she was reluctant to let his name out of her mouth, and she handled it with more care than their sire had ever seen fit to give the colt. "Rurisk," she said, and met eyes with the other mare briefly. She still remembered how gangly he’d been as a newborn, and her heart fluttered with the need to protect her little brother from the monster who’d seized him by the neck and shook, shook, shook him like a limp doll, his little hooves flailing in confusion and panic, his tiny mouth open but unable to give voice to his terror. When Jezibelle was a filly in the Forest, she’d often woken from nightmares where her brother could finally scream.

The bay mare wrinkled her nostrils. Memories. She hated them, hated being reminded of the Forest and of trees. Be it a willow or a full woodland, trees contained dangerous beasts. The only safe place on these islands was the mountain, the Peak, slate-gray and cold. There were trees lower down the mountain and some crawled up the face of it, but for the most part the land was flat and stark and safe.

Jezibelle flicked her tail and walked on.
