But always, in the back of his mind, Danny knew his time here could not last forever. He had to make it home, no matter how much he'd miss his new friend, because his family would miss him and he would miss them. Danny had already abandoned his twin, Dylan, once. When their father had died, Danny had retreated within himself and not even his twin's desperate need for companionship could pull him out again. Danny wouldn't do that again, not if he could help it. And so, while he and General floated lazily on their backs in the clear blue ocean and watched the stars twinkling above, Danny spoke of going home.

"It's been great, General, real great to be here, but you know I have to go, don't you?" he murmurred.

General sighed, but a soft splashing noise told Danny she nodded all the same. "I know..."

"But we can still be friends, can't we?" Danny asked, unable to hide the hope in his voice. General laughed, the happy sound echoing off the still waters.

"Of course we can, silly! I'm asleep on your dresser, my wing all banged up, remember?" General asked, amusement in her voice. Danny laughed too but, after a moment, grew serious again.

"So how do I get home?"

"All you have to do is wish real hard, Danny, just like you've been doing."

"Okay," Danny whispered. He let his eyes close, felt his breathing even out. He was just a hair away from utter focus when General's whisper broke through his concentration.

"Danny?" she asked.

"Yeah?" he replied, matching her soft tone.

"I'll miss being able to talk to you," the bird-girl said sadly.

"I'll miss it too," Danny answered. He squeezed her hand comfortingly, and let himself go.

"Leaving ssso sssoon, Danny-boy?"

Danny once more awoke in the garden, but this time something was wrong... It was night now, and bitter cold. Danny shivered as a biting wind dug into his skin.

"G-G-General?" he asked from between chattering teeth. But the voice was all wrong, General's was bright and happy and this voice was... dark, and menacing. A dark, lithe shape moved not far from where Danny lay. The boy lifted his head, narrowing his eyes in an attempt to get a better look at whatever it was. "Sperantia?"

The creature that parted from the darkness was no god's familiar, was like no beast Danny had ever seen. Part reptile, part cat, the creature watched him with glowing golden eyes. Danny's familiar was a big cat, a hunter through and through: he knew a predator's gaze when he met one. The urge to shudder, this time with fear, seized him, but Danny shoved it away. Now was no time to be weak, no time to give in to fear.

"Won't you ssstay with usss awhile longer, Danny?" purred the beast. A long, snake-like tongue drifted from the creature's open mouth, licking dark, pebbled lips with unmistakable hunger. "You only jussst arrived."

"N..." Danny swallowed hard, forced himself to sound braver than he felt. "No, thank you. I need to be getting back to my family now."

"Thisss family, Danny?"

Before Danny appeared an orb of light. As Danny gazed into its hypnotic depths, an image rose to the surface. His family gathered around a massive table, sharing a meal for the first time in ages. And there, right where he belonged at the head of the table, was their father. He was laughing at something Dylan had said, his head tossed back and those bright eyes of his alight. Danny's heart seemed to stop for one long, painful second. There was Flynn, looking eons younger and grinning like the carefree man he should have been. And Renn, oh, Renn! Laughing, teasing Renn, who made their lives all that much brighter just by being. Danny forced himself to breath again, to push past the pain and grief and the unbearable hope. He shook his head, forced himself to look away.

"That was my family, yes. But it's not anymore," Danny said firmly. Something smooth and warm slid along his wrist, making his hair stand on end.

"It could be again, you know," the creature tempted, its voice cold but undeniably entrancing. It was a voice that promised pain and suffering, while its words offered endless joy. "All you mussst do is ssstay here, with me."

"I said no!" Danny said forcefully. He leapt to his feet, whipping his arm through the ball of light. It turned to mist, blown away by the biting wind.

"Not even for your sssissster?"
