Danny whirled around, his temper truly awoken for the first time since the encounter began. His fists clenched and rose, threat in every line of his thin body. When he spoke, his voice was a growl that might have belonged to a much older, more dangerous man. "What did you just say?"

"What would ssshe sssay, if ssshe knew you threw away your lassst chance to make your family whole again?"

"She'd be proud of me!" Danny snarled. His fists were so tight now that his nails were digging into his flesh, but he didn't care. "Dad taught us better than to make deals with demons!"

The creature laughed, a smooth and terrifying sound. "Are you ssso sssure? Don't you wonder what ssshe doesss, when ssshe leavesss? I'd wager ssshe knowsss more than you about demonsss."

"TAKE THAT BACK!" Danny roared. His temper was truly up now, so hot and fierce his whole body shook with it. "Don't you dare speak about my sister like that, you piece of trash!"

"Ahhh, sssuch devotion. And yet you won't even try to make her happy. How regrettable."

Danny snarled. His body was taught with more violence than any young man should hold inside of him. It was as if suddenly, all the rage he'd kept bottled up inside, all the hate for the men who had killed his father and ruined his family, came pouring out of him in waves. He wanted to tear the creature limb from limb. He wanted to hunt it down, make it regret speaking poorly of his family. More than that, he admitted, he hated it for taunting him with something he knew he could never have and yet... was something he wanted with every beat of his young heart. His family whole, his sister smiling and healthy once again... Danny would have given anything, anything to do that for them again, but he knew in his heart that this was not the way to do it.

But then, in a moment of crystalline clarity, Danny realized the beast was toying with him. He shut his eyes, regulated his breathing. He found inside himself that well of serenity, the place he went to when emotion and sentiment were forgotten and all he was capable of was doing what had to be done. His hands relaxed, his tense shoulders eased. The beast was screaming now, obscenities and threats and taunts so vicious and vile Danny's stomach turned over in his center, but Danny kept his mind on one thing, and one thing only: Home.

Then he was crawling back through the hole in the tree, exhausted but triumphant. He stumbled out head first, but found himself landing on the warm expanse that was his familiar.

"Well, how'd it go?" Solarius asked eagerly. The tiger buried his face in Danny's neck, searching out strange scents. "What did you see?"

"Loads!" Danny answered, hugging his familiar's giant head affectionately. "I'll tell you all about it, but first, let's get home. I want to see everyone."

"Okay! We should check on General anyhow, don't ya think? Not that she can get herself into much trouble, I guess."

Danny laughed aloud, earning a confused look from his companion. "I'll explain later," he assured the tiger.
