The black mare inhaled deeply and began to regulate her breathing. Orhan’s nose against her cheek was a small comfort, and as her mind and heart calmed she relaxed a little in the midst of the familiar sounds of the night. “Sorun değil,” she said. She glanced over at Vesti, following her son’s gaze, and a small smile touched one corner of her mouth. She looked at Orhan, aware that the weight of another’s eyes could wake the sleeping mare.
"She is strong," El Aran said. Her voice was as low as her son’s. "And not stupid. She knows Salem like I know this Desert, and I think it would be unwise to force her away from here." She paused and let her gaze wander away from Orhan and to the familiar layout of the Desert. The black mare had spent so much time staring out of the oasis that she could probably recall every rock and blemish in the sand with her eyes closed.
El Aran twisted one ear toward Vesti and looked at her son again. "She is not a Purebred," the seer stated simply. "She can have no possible reason for wanting to cause either of us harm, and I do not think she is capable of that." The sorrel mare could have the all the fierceness of the sun in her heart —although that was still to be determined— but El Aran did not believe she was as vicious as the Purebreds. Vesti was simply trying to survive, and the black mare could find no fault in that.
"Have you some qualm about allowing her into this herd?" she asked.
