News 08.08.2021
Change was long overdue in Spirane. Now that I have learned who is still an active presence within the pack, the ranks have been updated. As I once took time away from the pack, so too now shall Kalseru. Know that she is still second in command of the pack, as is reflected in her rank. Once you are familiar with the new ranking system, if you would like to change positions or move up in the ranks you need only ask. Let this be a time of new life in Spirane, and a promise of great things to come!

When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.

She had been on guard throughout the night, patiently waiting by the central pack regions where many had dug their dens. Moonglow's birthing had gone relatively easily, though it seemed that she had not gained the appropriate weight or condition through the pregnancy - Niviaq was positive they would know the real damage that the birthing had done later rather than sooner. Snowshoe, on the opposing paw, had seemingly recovered quite well from her battle and had begun to gain weight steadily throughout the winter, rounding to large size before the coming of spring. To Niviaq, that signified a healthy litter and (hopefully) a simple birth. Still, she had to be prepared for the worst for motherhood was no easy task. She still remembered how awful it had been for the likes of Jaylah.

It was the scent that signified the beginning of birth that called Niviaq to attention, her tiny form dashing across the rocks to the den's vicinity. She had taken with her the usual supplies: poppy seeds, moss and aloe, even a feather encrusted with residual salt from the shores by Glorall. It would surely be enough to handle the brunt of any difficult birth though truly, there was little they could do when the damage became too great. It was up to the mother to fight through and endure - a healer could merely patch the skin and hope to stop bleeding. A daunting task, truly, and as she waited by the den, she could feel her heart thumping anxiously in her chest.

Finally, though, she heard a faint call from the den, the scent of blood seeping from its mouth all the same. Instantly, she shuffled forward on her belly, poking her muzzle into the darkness and allowing the female to understand who her visitor was - Niviaq knew to be weary, especially with first time mothers whose instincts could shock even them. When she was certain that Snowshoe's consent had been given, she shuffled further in, this time gripping her pelt bag and dropping it by the other female. There was just enough light in the den for her to assess the situation; three children suckling well, and a den that reeked of blood far too strongly to merely be from the birthing itself. There would be tearing, undoubtedly, and yet her lack of a distended abdomen at least made her certain it was nothing internal. The older female could not help but sight in relief with that confirmation, giving Snowshoe a pleasant, almost motherly smile as she moved in closer.

"I need to... well, it's going to be quite invasive. I am sorry, dear but it must be done. If you must, I ask that you bite down on a part of me that isn't so important."

She waited again, flashing a slightly sheepish smile before nudging the pelt towards the woman's posterior. Most of the mess had been cleaned up well, allowing her a better view of the cause of concern - several neat tears, though they lay deep. Exhaling heavily, she prepared herself for the task ahead, hoping to be able to solve the issue quickly enough so that they might turn their attention to something a little more... happier. So far, Snowshoe was doing so well but Niviaq would not hold her breath - a mother could slip so quickly into aggression, fear or even succumb to seemingly benign injuries.

"There are some small black seeds - you remember them, yes? Just by the edges of the pelt. Take them, and I will have you patched up in but a minute."

With that said and done, she pulled at the moss, separating it into a more easily maneuvered piece. With it, she dabbed at the blood, cleansing the wound of residual dirt and allowing the blood to better clot without risk of fresh blood washing the forming scabs away. It seemed they would be easily managed, though Snowshoe would undoubtedly need to remain quite still for some days to ensure there was no further tearing. Of course, that meant Niviaq would be quite busy running hunting errands and patrolling the borders. It was worth it though, as she heard the cries of two children - two? But there had been three. For a moment, she paused to consider it, finding herself smiling a little sadly - just like Kavik, she was sure. A child who could not use words the way they did.

"What are their names?"

She queried quietly, hoping to take Snowshoe's mind from the procedure as she began to apply the gel of aloe, hoping it would protect the wounds from bacteria and agitation.
