Sahin’s easy, carefree nature was infectious. She could feel his warmth seeping into her, cooking her worries and filling her with strength. The scenery didn’t hurt either. Sable stood entranced, her rump facing the ocean and her eyes drinking in the verdant grassland before her. It breathed life back into her. She itched to run out into it, to feel the wind in her hair and taste its grasses and drink of its waters. Standing there, she could understand suddenly why Sahin was the way he was.
The moment was fleeting, however, for her companion’s question suddenly reminded her exactly what she’d left behind, back in the bittersweet grasses of her homeland, and how vulnerable she was out here in the middle of nowhere, conversing with strange men. Answering his question honestly would have prompted her to divulge details that still caught in her throat when she tried to speak them. She would have to give him a pleasant lie.
Eyes still glued to the landscape, the young mare opened her mouth and meekly said the first thing that came to her mind. “I didn’t want to settle down without first seeing what was out here. I wanted to know what I was missing.” I wanted to know that it wasn’t all so terrible. After a thoughtful pause, she turned her eyes to Sahin and smiled at him. “Would you happen to know where a girl could get a drink around here?”
