DROP EVERY PRETENSE

Drown every sense you own

The pair were only a few strides into the trees when Quicksilver heard approaching footsteps. Sunlight still spilled unfiltered onto her back, warming it, and she found it difficult to tense up in wariness as the buckskin mare and pale colt approached them. She watched them with neutral eyes, the filly beside her peeking around her shoulder at the colt. When he reached for with his muzzle, the pale girl took an excited step forward and shyly bumped her nose against his.

“Yes, I’m Quicksilver,” the steely mare responded, not entirely surprised that this horse had guessed her name. Her greeting into the Forest seemed to fit the overall situation; she had left Lyden, but not for good, so the welcome was not hostile; but she had been gone quite a while, and returned without warning, so the welcome was not exactly warm and familiar. Quicksilver nodded at the buckskin mare, assuming she was a leader here.

Lyden joined them then, trotting in to join their small circle and examining Quicksilver and their daughter. She exchanged breaths with him, brushing her nose along his neck as he did to her. “The Forest held a few sad memories for me,” she explained. “I was not eager to return here. Your daughter changed my mind, I suppose, but she was a right terror to carry around.” Quicksilver chuckled. The filly had not only been frightful in her very existence, but she had been heavy, as well. Quicksilver was sure her legs were three times as muscular now than they had been when she first met Lyden.

When the pale stallion turned his attention to the filly, she snorted and shook her head to rid her mane of the ruffling. You’re going to mess up my hair! she wanted to say, but could not, and instead just pouted at her father.

“I’ve thought of too many names,” Quicksilver said. “I think Looking Glass fits rather nicely. She’s shiny and bright, just like a mirror.” She looked up at the mare and foal; Jormungandr and Joukahainen. “Hello,” she said with a smile. Glancing back to Lyden, she said, “Yes, I think I’ll stay. I was just wandering the mainland, nothing to worry about. There were a few strange animals but I didn’t run into any danger.” She bumped her nose against his cheek. “I’ll warn you the next time I go on an adventure, and I won’t be gone so long next time,” she promised.
