Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

I had awoken, drenched in a massacre of blood once again. The splintered bones of my hapless victim shard and scattered like shrapnel amid the torrent of it's viscerated flesh. It had been a wolf, I knew though the carcass was hardly recognizable. The skull had been fractured into several pieces, bits of brain matter and one eye still dangling through the socket and brain cavity. Entrails draped across my back and forelegs, as if the demon inside me had rolled in the carnage out of sheer pleasure. My head throbbed painfully, as if struck by the lightning of a migraine. I had no recollection of the event, just as I never did.

I scrambled to my feet, my heart hammering in my chest as momentary panic rose when I couldn't disentangle myself from the string of bowels. I ended up having to bite my way through the fray, trotting several paces away before I could breathe easy again. I rounded and looked at the macabre scene, shuddering despite myself, and looked myself over. There were several new cuts and gashes all across my frame. Whoever my victim had been had put up a harrowing fight. his blood cloaked damn near every inch of me, so thoroughly saturated into the fur that I was one giant matte of gnarled tangles, most of it having already coagulated to an oozy consistency or in some places, become crusted.

Jaws set. A dark ominous voice sniggering in the back of my head. {...What?} it demanded with scoff. {...you don't care for my latest masterpiece? You should have seen how he howled as I ate him alive....!}

"Shut the fuck up." I snapped back, brusquely.

{Temper, temper....} it slithered in retort as I attempted to tamp it back down into the furthest corners of my conciousness. Shaking myself yet a second time, I finally looked about at my surroundings. I was in a thicket, heavy with bracken and thorny briars, but I could hear the rattle of water close at hand, telling me I was very close to the shores of Aplos River.

I made a bee-line for the water, wanting nothing more then to wash the filth from my skin... though I know it would do nothing to cleanse my Soul of yet another sin. I missed not a single beat as I loped head-long into the shallows, massive body propelled out into the current so far as my neck and I submerged my head to let the water flow across my face and body. Coming up for air, I stood several minutes in the stronger ebb and flow, until the current did it's bidding and washed the majority of the blood from my frame. But it could not take all of it away. I stared hard at my reflection, noting that a large scrap now adorned the bridge of my nose and across one eye. The skin about the eye was swollen and discolored some too. No wonder my head pained me so. My reflection looked quite the monster, staring back it me. Grizzled, chiseled features were sharp and fearsome. Eyes were blood-shot from lack of sleep and worse, making the venom yellow pits all the more loathing as streaks of purple lightning forked through the irises. I looked every bit the killer that I was, despite my best efforts to cage the beast inside me.

Nothing was working.
"Damn You!" I cursed, one paw slapping at the surface of the water with unalderated self-hate, distorting the image. "Damn you to Hell!" But I knew no amount of curses could exorcise my demon. I was chained to him, until Death destroyed us both. Perhaps I was coward that I couldn't bring myself to end my own existence. Or perhaps it was because the demon lurking within would not allow it.
