At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

The female was out walking in the afternoon sun, wandering freely through territory she was used to. The falls had always been a point of interest for the girl, as this was one of her only locations where food was easily obtained. Fishing was one of the only things the ess could do, her frail body demure as it always was. Mink was a small adult, nimble and lean but not holding much skill in athletic abilities. Which made sense; how could she train if she couldn’t see? There had been a small amount of time when Mink was a pup where she did know what the world looked like. It was lush and green and pure and everything anyone could ever ask for. Of course, she didn’t know that until things started to go black. First it was just in corners of her eyes, but then it spread closer, faster with each day. Until, about three years ago, it disappeared forever. And the eve was left in eternal darkness.

But with the loss of her sight, other senses started to gain strength to give powers she never thought would have every been possible. Her hearing, for one thing, had become impeccable; better than anyone’s she had ever met. It helped her avoid things she had no interest in intercepting, such was war from travelling and large animals she had crossed over the years. Her scent was also very strong, but her audettes were always most trustworthy. And speaking of which, she heard something over the small roar of the falls. A small splash, followed by a little scream. And Mink jumped and started to run. She hated running; her senses would have to work quicker and the territory flat if she were to not trip. But the vixen had gotten skills over the years. She ran with her feet arched high so nothing would stub her. And it worked, because the smell of water reminded her that she was closer than expected.

The girl heard another sharp squeal before the water swallowed the sound and buried it alive. And the bella jumped in. The desperation was starting to seep into her own skin, leaking out into the water and encompassing her mind. Mink had no tactics; really just feeling around for the sign of flesh. Several moments passed, and the girl had to reach up for air again. How could this part of the shallow falls could be deep enough where she couldn’t stand? The world was full of mysteries, some never reaching the limelight of existence. But, before her hope was fully destroyed, the small touch of wet fur sent waving fingers of fire up her veins. She cradled her paw underneath the body, which was only slightly bigger than her hand itself. Mink pulled the pup through the water, and sent her jaws clasping around its neck. And with a thundering gasp, her head broke the surface.

It was at least another ten seconds before the eve got back to the shore, as the water was starting to turn to heavy rapids. Her white fur glittered with the water on her pelt, her ink tipped calves and feet below finding the sand and hurrying to a place where water had never touched. And only then did she set the pupling down. Even with the stench of water starting to become caustic, Mink could tell it was a brute. “Breathe, please breathe.” Whether the pup heard her or not, she pleaded; very, very lightly. She turned him over so his back was facing the sky and pressed ever so softly on his stomach. Hopefully within the next vital seconds he would throw up the water in his stomach.
