Torram could tell Sperantia was displeased with his comments and fell silent, feeling just the slightest bit intimidated by the small cat. Even though he was several times larger than she was, and even though she didn't have Mallos to back her up, Sperantia made up for her size and lack of magic with sheer force of personality. Min fluffed her feathers, returning the cat's glare with equal fervor, before Torram poked her and glowered at the bird, clearly trying to remind her to mind her manners.

Four sets of eyes returned to the bed as Sperantia loudly announced she was not a familiar. Torram couldn't help it: despite his earlier feelings of intimidation, he had to laugh. Picturing Sperantia as being a lesser being was, well, rather amusing. He started to explain that when, to his shock, Minerva spoke up.

"Familiars aren't lesser beings," she said sternly. "Even bonded as we are, we're vital. We're important, to our fairies and life in general. What would Shaman be without us?" The haughty bird ruffled her feathers, lifting a claw to point at Torram's head. "This one has tried to get himself killed no less than three times since I've met him. And Birch there would have been lost without Ro when-"

Torram cleared his throat pointedly. Though Sperantia, when she was herself at least, was considered a friend by both of them, there were some things that did not need to be announced to the group when Birch herself had made every effort to hide her sometimes jagged emotional state. Min shook her head, clearly not a big believer in tiptoeing around such things, and finished with: "Without Ro."

"And you've always been special," Tor added, again a bit tentatively. "Mallos and you... You're a great team, at least from what we saw. You're just as important, and strong, and respected as he is."

Birch nodded at Sperantia's tentative question, smiling a little. The information was impersonal, the sort of thing anyone might know if they'd read about the originals, but at least it was a start.

"Yes, that Mallos," she confirmed. But at Sperantia's second question, about original fairies and familiars, Birch paused a moment. She frowned in thought. "You're the only original fairy familiar I've met," she admitted, but added. "Though I haven't met any of them besides Mallos, really, so I'm not the best resource on that sort of thing."
