Former Tampa star "Owens" sharp in NJAA debut Posted on July 21, 2014 at 12:51:51 PM by Jeff "Laca" Conway
Former longtime Tampa Jai-alai frontcourt star Dwayne "Owens" made his NJAA debut Sunday night in St. Pete before 12 players as a backcourter. A veteran of 22 seasons, including 21 at Tampa, Owens was a popular late games player known for his fierce competitiveness.
Known for wearing goggles, Owens has rarely played jai-alai since retiring twenty years ago. Now a resident of Davie, he had just thrown the ball around a couple of times at Dania Jai-alai. But Sunday night, he quickly adjusted to the quirky short wall court in St. Pete and played brilliantly.
Owens won his first game - playing with his buddy and former roommate Scott King. It really seemed like the good old days of Tampa Jai-alai with two ex-pros playing on the same team. He made a few great catches and threw the heck out of the ball.
Owens played 3 more games but ended the night with a win in his first game. A special thanks to Scott King for bringing him over. Owens is in Sarasota today on a business trip. Replies: There have been no replies.
