Soljor couldn’t help but chuckle as he watched the distracted filly. She had been so intent on her goal that she hadn’t heard him. While that might be dangerous one day, her adorable reaction only made his smile wider. At least like her sisters, she hadn’t lost her footing. She was lighter boned than the other two. Maybe her arabian heritage also made her more graceful on some level.

“Are they now?” He followed her gaze out to the little dark creatures as they danced about the kelp beds. “I can’t say I’ve watched them much. Maybe they’re like squirrels of the sea. They kinda act like them.” He supposed the hyper way the otters seemed to act was similar to the way the squirrels scampered up and down and through trees.

He was surprised at the touch of her little muzzle against his shoulder. He smiled and reached over to blow a breath into her forelock. Then she asks more questions Perhaps young minds are just more curious than older ones. At least, they are more vocal.

“The wolves seem to be gone,” He said. “They have moved after the caribou. And you, Harlequin, are just what wolves want. No chasing them for you.” He looked at the filly. “Wolves are long. Where there is one, you must suppose there is at least one more than you can’t see. They tend to be grey, but I’ve seen a black one about.” He cocked his head. “They are a bit shorter than you are now. They have bright eyes - golden and brown. And don’t be confused by their voices - when you hear Wolf Song, you must be extra cautious. They are not like the cats that hunt alone.” Maybe it was too much information and maybe the filly didn’t comprehend all of it.

But Soljor would at least tell her.

“See this mark on my leg,” He stepped out to show her a long scar on his front left leg. “One wolf gave me that. If it had timed it’s jump better, it would have been my neck it caught. And then it and it’s pack would have had me.” It had been a close call. And he was much bigger than his daughter.
