At Leisure Lake the sun is always shining and only a few stray clouds roam the open sky; paradise is the one word that really describes it. This beautiful lake is clean and refreshing, the very best place to swim and fish. Pups are known to play here while older wolves watch at the side, engaged in their own activities.

One Step Closer to the Edge and I’m About to Break

_________________________________________________________________________

The brute had wandered away from his pack yet again. What was the point in him even remaining there? He had no friends, no one to even talk to. The one lupine he thought he had had as a friend had not spoken to him in months. And then she came back pregnant! What had Apollonia gotten herself into? He had no idea, but he wished there was a way he could help the young ess. The two had only recently become full grown adults and he thought she had been his friend, his only friend. But clearly he had been very wrong. The russet female had disappeared for a while and then returned just in time to give birth. And no one knew who the father was and for whatever reason she was not sharing. And that really worried the young brute. If someone had hurt her she should tell, should her pack, and he and the others would take care of the miserable worthless creature that had done it to her. Knowing how fearsome her father was should be enough to instill fear and dread into any lupine. And just when he was thinking of leaving the pack and striking out on his own again the queen had given him a task and of all things, a rank as well. The wandering russet brute growled to himself in annoyance. What had he done to prove to the queen that he could handle a rank and the task of leading a hunt? But he must have done something for Odessa to have more confidence in him than he had in himself, and honestly he trusted her more than he trusted himself so he would roll with it. If he disappointed her, which he was going to try his hardest not to do, well then she could kick him out. He only called Cold Summers home because he had been there for so long, not because of the wolves in it. But he had pledged his loyalty to Odessa and Caspian and loyal he would stay. He was not the type to leave just because he became bored.

But Mezic had once again felt useless and unwanted in the lands of Cold Summers and had wandered to a place he went to often, one of the only places that made him happy. The lake. He remembered the time that Apollonia had taken him here to teach him how to hunt. It was one of the happier memories that the brute had of this place and he clung to it. And so whenever he was in a mood, which was becoming more and more often, his paws led him to the lake where he would fish or just swim and relax. With a sigh he headed off a bit of a faster trot, wanting to get away to clear his head. It did not take him long to get to the familiar path that led to the lake and the relaxation that it promised to bring, but he saw an unusual sight when he arrived. One of the members of his pack happened to be there, for a minute he forgot her name, staring at the russet female through the trees, debating about turning around or if he should head over and say hello. He was on the opposite side of the lake as her and he would either need to swim across or walk around to approach her. Normally the brute was a friendly fellow, loved to chit chat and be around people, but Cold Summers had changed him. The isolation that had been forced upon him in the pack had caused him to become moody and brooding, no longer enjoying the company of others as he once did. The bubbly, happy-go-lucky teen that had come wandering into the pack was gone, replaced by a body that merely went through the motions of living, not feeling anything anymore.

As Mezic was contemplating what to do, considering the option of leaving more so than the option of approaching, he saw the femme jump into the water. She did it very clumsily and he was not sure if she had ever gone swimming before. His presumptions were right when he saw her struggling to rise above the surface. Without thinking he was running towards the lake, jumping into the cool water the moment he reached the edge. He may not be the friendliest lupine anymore but he would never watch one of his packmates drown. His heart raced as he forced his legs to move as fast as they could, needing to get to the femme who he now remembered to be called Arrio. Why his mind had suddenly remembered the femme’s name when his mind was running on overload he had no idea. As Mezic’s form swam quickly through the water towards her he saw her splashing furiously and he tried to quicken his pace. He had not anticipated how large the lake was and it was taking him much longer than he would have liked to get closer to her. As Mezic was finally getting near to her he saw that she was beginning to stay afloat better and that she was heading for shore. He relaxed a bit, slowing his pace to a more comfortable one as he continued to swim towards her. The brute caught up to her after a while and he reached the shore when she did, not too far from her. The brute was panting hard, tongue hanging from his maw as he turned and glared at her, wondering if she realized how stupid she had been, how easily she could have gotten herself hurt. Even though she had managed to save herself he was not sure if that was skill or sheer dumb luck.

Arrio sat not far from the water, glaring at it as if it was the lake’s fault that she had almost gotten herself killed and not her own stupid fault. Mezic shook his thick russet pelt out, water spraying everywhere and then he turned towards her, voice raised to a louder tone than he meant it to be, ”What the hell did you think you were doing? You could have gotten yourself killed!” His vocals came out in almost a shout, but he realized that fear was what was causing his voice to raise. He had been genuinely scared for a moment that Arrio was going to drown and he would not make it there in time to help her. His large amber orbs softened after a moment, realizing that he had been glaring at the drenched femme, ”Sorry,” he muttered, ”Are you alright Arrio? Are you hurt?” The brute walked closer over to her, sitting down a few feet away from the femme that he had probably offended. Mezic felt bad for shouting at her, but really, what had she been thinking?
