Danny tried his best to support his sister as emotions swamped her. He wasn't good at this sort of thing, especially not when it was his sister whom he desperately wanted to cheer up. The desperation in her voice when she asked after their brother - the brother Danny hadn't even recognized - squeezed his at his heart.
"He looked..." Danny hesitated, thinking back. Sad, he thought. Or maybe lonely was a better word. Had he judged Henry too soon? Hadn't he liked 'Felix'? Maybe he had a reason for lying, although Danny honestly couldn't think of any good reason for Henry to put his sister through this. And now, looking at the situation through better informed eyes, he realized Henry was thinking of their sister too. Hadn't he told Danny about the lovebirds? "He was okay, definitely not hurt or starving." Danny watched with horror as Renn's lip trembled again, and hurried to answer her questions before she could burst into tears again. "He was down by the water, picking up some crates for..." The other pirates, Danny now realized, and bit his lip. He hurried to add, quickly: "He talked about you, kinda. I think... I think he misses you too..." Then, immediately, worry set in. Was that the wrong thing to say? Would that upset her even more? Danny shot a grateful look as Nico hurried over, trying his best to calm Renn. He wished there were more he could do, more he could offer. At least Nico had the ability to scout the caves, which Danny desperately hoped would help calm her down. Danny abruptly paled at Renn's next question, though. "I-I-I didn't mean to!" he said hurriedly, feeling tears of his own starting to form at the corner of his eyes. "I just... we were just... talking, and I said..." Danny swallowed hard, hurrying after Renn as she began hurriedly packing. "Renn, what are you doing? Renn, please stop," he said, now crying in earnest. "Please, Flynn will know what to do! You don't have to..." Danny swallowed the rest of his pleas, knowing he was drifting towards panic himself. Besides, it didn't seem like Renn was even listening to him at this point. Nico's touch at his knee drew his attention, and he swallowed hard as he wiped away his tears and nodded. "I'm going right now. Don't let her... Just..." Danny couldn't find the words, but his eyes were full of worry when he looked into Nico's. Without any further hesitation, Danny and Sol barreled out of the room and the family's apartment. They had to find Flynn now! |
