It was hunger that woke her.
It was hunger that had woken her every morning for the past week. The land was bursting with the new life of spring and yet recently a mole had been her largest catch. Such incompetence was unusual and Greer could only suppose she was distracted, though by what she couldn’t really place.
Yawning hugely the wolf pulled herself from the warm hollow where she had sheltered and stepped out into the early mist. A heavy blanket was still settled over the grass for as far as she could see. The morning light was dim and blue, unusually cold for this time of year. Greer shivered slightly and bared her teeth at the power the chill possessed over her body. She broke into a trot to warm herself, pale eyes scanning low for any small creature she might be able to make her breakfast.
Her strides were long and light, ready to bolt if danger lifted its ugly head. Greer’s nose twitched anxiously, the distraction that had haunted her tickling her nasal passage. It had been so long...The days seemed to stretch into an endless arc of solitude. She preferred it, of course, but there were times when even her own fascinating mind became cumbersome with her thoughts.
Greer paused at the top of a knoll and stood at the edge of a stand of oak trees. The writhing, tangling branches offered sparse cover under their new leaves but she felt safer nonetheless. Her nose continued to twitch and the answer to her silent asking finally occurred to her.
Wolves. The scent pressing at her temple and invading her mind was other wolves. The dark fur along Greer’s spine rose warily. Because it wasn’t just a pack. It was hundreds of her kind.
